Utah Hockey Club down to final 3 names: Hockey Club, Mammoth, and Outlaws (upd: Wasatch already nixed)

To me the HC logo looks like a Yeti logo. So maybe the HC is just a placeholder and there could still be some recourse that brings Yeti back into consideration.

I do think the Mammoth logo is neat, although I wonder if the Pattent Office with see a conflict with Wolfgang Van Halen's band Mammoth VH. Or the Outlaws with the Outlaws MC?

Problem with the Mammoth logo is the they are going to get the nickname The Snuffaluffagus....

Maybe they go with the Mountain/Yeti logo and add the Utah Squatch as an option. Could have a pretty good mascot with that.

Hopefully if they chose mammoth they change the logo a bit. It would be a cool to have the trunk grabbing onto a hockey stick, similar to what the Penguins and Sharks do
No. The players are holding hockey sticks and skating on a sheet of ice. We know they're playing hockey. Having an animal hold a hockey stick (or puck) in the logo is flat out tacky unless it's a full on cartoon like the Pens (where it goes so far past tacky that it gets to silly).

I actually really like that Mammoth logo. Strong, distinctive silhouette, classy and will age well. Adding a hockey stick would diminish it.

Wow 😅 these are seriously the logos? All so basic and generic EA sports create a team stuff. Who gets paid to design these things? I've seen so many better fan created ones.

So like the Lightning years back, someone just Googled the name and found generic clip art logo to use.

Impressive.

At least these generic logos actually have some depth and detail unlike the Bolts.
Give Google Image Search some credit, there's way more variety in options.

These mock-up attempts look like Microsoft Office '98 clip art.

I lived in DC when they changed the basketball team's name from Bullets to Wizards. I don't think anyone then or now thinks that mascots cause gun violence. But I personally found it in poor taste for a basketball team to be called the "Bullets" in a city where almost 500 people a year were dying from gun violence.

There are a lot of talented graphic designers out there, I'm sure they can come up with a suitably badass 'Outlaws' logo without fetishizing handguns. Don't think that makes them "bleeding hearts" for doing so

should probably get rid of the Hurricanes while we’re at it

Wow I really thought they would have no legit names. lol

Mammoth was one of my favorite ones back when they had the first polls. But that logo looks nothing like a Mammoth! It reminds of the situation with the Kraken. All they had to do was show a great menacing Kraken on their chest but instead they gave us this weird "S" thing. Now how hard is it to show a big Mammoth facing us with this two huge mouth horns on each sides?

I was under the impression that the "logos" were meant to be a quick mock-up of the approach they would be going with for a logo if that name was chosen. I don't think they intend to just take the image shown, slap it on a jersey, and call it a day.

Yeah, they've confirmed these are placeholders. You can clearly tell the yeti one is the most developed and the other two are in early phases because of the time available to plan each. Yeti was clearly the plan and they were designing around it, the trademark ruling threw a wrench in that.

I like how it fits with the color scheme at least, though I'd hope for a better logo.
I don't mind the logo, not too sure how you would improve it. That said I'd know better when I see it.

On the bright side, if they go with Mammoth we can post this gif when they suck

True but let's be honest, they sound that way until they don't. Pretend as best you can the names I'm about to list had no history or legacy. Imagine if a new expansion team was toying with the Flyers, Red Wings, Senators or Canadiens as team name options. I mean the last one would be laughed out to death as peak lazy. Legacy and history do a lot to make most names sound great or at least decent enough.

As a Vegas resident, I despised the name Golden Knights and the reason for Foley's selection and insisted I'd only call them the Knights. A winning inaugural season with a cup finals appearance helped me correct course pretty quickly.
eh the alliteration with the Flyers still makes that one work for Philadelphia at least. That one would definitely be considered if they were to be an expansion team even now.

Are all three of those logos not literally lifted from the EA NHL video game team builder? If they’re not identical, they’re close enough as to be so extraordinary lazy I would believe it if you told me whoever they’re going to pay millions of dollars to to design their sweaters is literally just doing it in the video game.

Sure and this probably should be bolded and at the header of every page of this thread - but it’s not as if folks will actually read it. Much more fun just to fire off “my kindergartener can do better work in ten minutes can’t believe this is what they are going with!” takes.

Although, I’m not sure the franchise is doing itself any favors by being this interactive and loose with the process. First you tell everybody we need a year to really get this right and involve fans, which is fine. But then the mock-ups you trot out 6 months into the process are clearly preliminary, or worse, basically lifted clipart (the Outlaws one). So no matter how many bolded red disclaimers you put out there that “THIS IS NOT THE FINAL BRAND” - it comes off looking like you’ve been twiddling your thumbs and pulled this together in a week.

Which…actually may make some sense - I think probably…they wanted Yetis badly…and while that HC concept logo still looks like a work in progress, you can tell they were actually trying to do something clever with it versus “here’s the generic Mammoth” or “here’s the generic Outlaw from EA Sports recolored”.

I dunno. Part of me thinks they should have just gotten to the name via voting and then just gone back to the shop and completed the entire real brand for a full release. This has turned into a bit of a mess.

One of the biggest issues is that they're married to the whole "Utah" thing. You could do so much more, alliteration- and name-wise, with "Salt Lake."
