Usports NCAA Commitments

I’m almost more curious how many guys leave each year after this season…

Say a guy gets 35 points in the CIS as a rookie , is he just off to the states? We won’t know until the time comes , just a thought .
This is a good point and another scenario to consider. Will this year be the outlier in terms of the number of guys going U Sports -> NCAA…or will the US schools continue to scout U Sports?

If a guy gets passed over coming out of junior and is maybe a late bloomer, goes U Sports, has a really good rookie season, I’m sure many of them would then be looking to head south.

I'm guessing the USports teams aren't super excited to announce the number of guys leaving especially teams losing a bunch of guys and especially to the NCAA vs graduating and signing pro. UNB has made no mention of Elliott signing in the AHL where in previous years they would have a made at least a few posts about it.

My guess is we'll have to mostly rely on the NCAA side of things (media and teams) to post about USports departures.
Good points. I guess it doesn't matter who reports it, the guy is still gone.

I haven't seen McGurn on Elite Prospects but Motew is there and also Tyson Galloway, CAL to Lake Superior State.

Not necessarily trying to suggest a cattiness to how UNB announces/doesn't announce departures (it may just be unintentional half-assery?), but I have noticed dudes who leave after one season, give or take, don't often get the congrats tweets from the UNB socials. IIRC, they posted nothing when Guay, Phelan, and Pinard left, off the top of my head.

Definitely can't see them shouting out guys who leave for the NCAA.

If your wife left you for a far richer and better looking man, you wouldn’t make a Facebook post congratulating her , I’m sure that’s how the teams feel watching players leave for other schools … If McKenna goes NCAA you want to bet Medicine Hat doesn’t acknowledge it, right or wrong .

Guys going pro is different and I’m shocked they wouldn’t acknowledge AHL guys because if anything that’s something to hang your hat on and speaks to the level of the program

Usports is definitely going to lose some of its top talent but I believe it's going be fine. Here's how I think will play out:

-Top 10-20% of CHL guys will go pro after 19 (No change)
-Top 20-50% of CHL guys will go NCAA (Loss for Usports)
-1/2 of CHL guys 50-75% percentile guys will go NCAA (Loss for Usports)
-Remainder of guys who are playing in the CHL as 20s or now playing Junior A as age outs will go to Usports (No change)

-Top 20% of Junior A guys who would have gone D1 will now play Usports.
-Bottom 20% of Canadian guys who used to have a spot in D1 will now play Usports.
-20-50% percentile Junior A guys who used to be very top end D3 guys will now be able to play Usports.

I know the numbers aren't an exact science or anything but thats basically how I think things will eventually shake out to be. Also, there's still going to be the odd 60-80 point CHL guy who will rather go Usports fox X,Y or Z reason.
The low end Canadians who will no longer have room in D1 because of the CHL guys going south are still great players and would have been 20-40 point CHL guys as 19 year olds had they gone that route...

The top end CHL guys will undoubtedly leave but overall I think the level of play won't be that different. Also, with the new pro eligibility rule in usports, I think we'll see a lot of coast guys and maybe even some who had a cup of coffee in the AHL coming back to school which will help make up for the loss of top end CHL guys.

Also, the new 26 man roster rule in the NCAA will force even more top end Junior A guys/low end D1 Canadians north. Which will help Usports too.

The only way I see Usport Hockey really taking a nose dive will be if there is a massive D1 expansion with the southern US schools which I don't see happening in the next 10-15 years.

Hope what I wrote makes sense.

But, where does the money come from if a Jr A guy gets dropped from his D1 team; he has no CHL money to go to a CIS school. Perhaps he goes to a D2 or D3 school.

The rules right now are that D1 teams have 18 full scholarships for an unlimited roster size. That 18 can go right to 18 guys or can be split up amongst x amount of guys on the roster. Whatever the coach wants. Starting next year, this goes to 26 but the roster size gets capped at 26 guys(schools/teams can opt of this to stay with the 18 man scholarship system if that makes more sense for them).

All this to say, most of the bottom end D1 guys are not getting full rides. From what I know, the 80-100th percentile d1 guy is paying anywhere from 10-25k+ USD a year. So just off that, CIS is cheaper.

Next thing is D3 programs are not allowed to give out athletic scholarships. They subsidize the cost of going to the school by giving out "academic scholarships/grants". Either way this comes out to being anywhere from 10k-40k USD a year to go to school and play D3.

School in Canada is generally much cheaper than that and on average CIS guys get much more "free" stuff in terms of sticks, gear, apparel... then D3 in general.

Basically, it makes more sense in my opinion, for a Junior A and or D1 guy who gets bumped down or cut or what have you to go play CIS which is better hockey, cheaper and a better option for pro opportunities down the road. There is definitely going to be some guys who choose d3 but I would say 90+ % would rather play CIS.
