Tri-City names Mark Abalan ninth head coach in franchise history

Duluth native returns to the USHL and will take over for Anthony Noreen after seven seasons in Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. — The USHL has a new bench boss as the Tri-City Storm have officially hired Mark Abalan.

The Duluth native replaces Anthony Noreen after seven seasons and becomes the ninth head coach in franchise history. Noreen was named the head coach of Miami University in April. ...

Abalan joins the Storm after spending the last three seasons with the Northstar Christian Academy Knights 16U AAA organization in Alexandria, Minnesota. The 48-year-old led the Knights to a 68-36-3 record but has plenty of previous USHL ties.

He was the head coach for 24 games with the Chicago Steel during the 2017-18 season and spent eight seasons in Sioux City — three as the associate head coach (2018-21) and five as an assistant (2012-16). ...

USHL News | 2024 Annual General Meeting

In addition to an outstanding two days at the 2024 NHL Draft that saw 49 players of its players selected, the United States Hockey League also held its Annual General Meeting in Las Vegas, Nev., last Thursday and Friday.

The 2023-24 season was a historic one for the USHL that saw the Fargo Force establish a regular-season record for wins with 50 before claiming the Clark Cup as playoff champions for the second time.

The year started with 190 former USHL players beginning the season on NHL Opening Night Rosters and 908 USHL alumni listed on 2023-34 NCAA rosters.

Player success continued to rise at elite levels, with former Chicago Steel forward Macklin Celebrini capturing the 2024 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in the NCAA. Celebrini and former Green Bay Gamblers defenseman Artyom Levshunov were selected first and second overall, respectively in the 2024 NHL Draft. ...

A total of 1,122,616 fans attended USHL regular-season games in 2023-24, a slight increase from the 2022-23 total of 1,116,004. The Sioux Falls Stampede established a state of South Dakota record for most fans to attend a hockey game when it’s annual Wiener Dog promotion game on Feb. 11 vs. the Sioux City Musketeers drew 11,025 fans.

The USHL saw growth in its streaming viewership with a 37% increase in total viewers, a 23% increase in live minutes watched and a 40% increase in the highest-viewed game. The USHL’s Instagram platform now claims 81,400 followers and has over 72,000 followers on X (Twitter). A new video interview feature called USHL in Focus was launched, USHL Plays of the Week were reintroduced and USHL TikTok was created.

The USHL successfully launched its Spiideo Camera system (used for player safety, officiating training and goal review; and most teams used the platform for team video review) in all 16 of its arenas in 2023-24. ...

OMAHA, Neb. — As the temperatures hover around 90 degrees and the calendar churns into August, it’s hard for those in the nation’s heartland to have hockey on their minds.

However, inside Liberty First Credit Union Arena, Lennie Childs is chomping at the bit and counting down the days on the 2024-25 season.

The 32-year-old was hired by the USHL’s Omaha Lancers in April and is set to embark on his new gig this fall — an opportunity Childs doesn’t take lightly.

While he’s taking over a team that is a combined 33-79-8-4 over the past two seasons, Childs wouldn’t be here if he didn’t believe in the organization.

“Everything about this job has been awesome so far and this organization is a really special place,” Childs recently told The Rink Live. “The people that are here, the history of the franchise, the city of Omaha — it’s all been really exciting and it already feels like home. You can tell the people care for and take care of each other, and they do things the right way, and that was something that really stood out to me.” ...

Hey, this is kinda random butttt I recently took job in Kearney NE where the tri city Storm play. Ive never caught a USHL game before. Who are the best players to watch this year? Would love a short list of some must see prospects. Cheers to anyone who can help

Your timing is good (at least for hockey). I suggest you start by clicking the links found in posts above (HERE and HERE) to read 2024-25 USHL Western Conference previews from The Hockey News of new & returning players for each team you might see play in Kearney. The author of those previews has a pending review of Western team goalies as well, so keep an eye on his THN contributor page or just watch this thread for another link when I see it published.

Two other hockey media websites that are worth checking regularly for USHL news & player profiles are The Rink Live and FloHockey.tv. The three sources I've suggested will offer far more useful reading material before & during the season than the historically haphazard updates to content on the USHL home page.

Good luck in your new job, and I hope you get to attend & enjoy USHL hockey while you're there. The later in the season, the noticeably better the play gets as the junior players & teams develop their rhythms. Another thing to note: In my travels to watch USHL hockey over the last 9 years, I've found the Tri-City Storm fans to be among the most loyal & enthusiastic followers of their home team; so game nights @ Viaero Center oughta be a good time. :wave:

The MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex in West Des Moines has two ice rinks: #1 with a stated seating capacity of up to 2,400 (a number which includes floor seating for multipurpose events); and #2 with a bleacher seating capacity of 300. From those details, I assume that the Buccaneers' plan is to establish Rink #1 as their home ice which is seemingly consistent with the "Dear Buccaneer Fans" press release: "We are diligently working on creating a new seating layout that will try to mirror the same game day view and experience that you had at Buccaneer Arena." [Editor's Note: For those who have never visited the arena in Urbandale, see photos on my public Flickr page.] Per this Des Moines Register follow-up article, Buccaneer Arena seats 3.461 (the highest number cited among several web sources that range upward from 3,250). The latest Bucs average attendance numbers that I could find (2019-20 season) was 2,256, which immediately points to a fan capacity challenge for the team playing at the RecPlex. But I guess they have until their October 4th home opener to sort out that little detail. ⌛

As for a permanent home, your guess is as good as mine. If the Bucs' ownership group (Orchard View Sports & Entertainment led by Michael Devlin II - they also own the ECHL Iowa Heartlanders) has secured a commitment from the West Des Moines city government (owners of the RecPlex) to make significant AND permanent facility changes, maybe the team could stay & play there beyond 2024-25. The Register article linked above ends with a tease of an alternative future involving possible relocation of the Bucs to the long-promised Merle Hay Mall arena development in Des Moines, though that on-again-off-again plan was formally rejected by the team owners earlier this summer. Another possibility is that the Bucs ownership becomes tired of being shuffled around town and sells the team to another group to figure it all out.

FORCE ANNOUNCE CHANGES TO HOCKEY OPERATIONS STAFF

FARGO, ND – The Fargo Force announced today, Tuesday, (August) 27th, a pair of changes to the structure of the Hockey Operations Staff. Effective immediately Fargo Force Head Coach, Brett Skinner, will become the team's General Manager/Head Coach. Cary Eades will remain the team's President of Hockey Operations and become the Assistant General Manager of the Force.

In his first year as Head Coach Skinner helped lead the team to the winningest season in franchise & league history. With a 50-10-2-0 record during the regular season under Skinner the Force clinched the second Anderson Cup Championship title in franchise history along with leading the league in a multitude of categories. He also helped lead the Force to the second Clark Cup Championship title in franchise history.
