Here's the thing about Cousins.
We all know he played well last year. We all know he had potential. But there were a few warning signs. Before last year all he did was throw picks in crucial situations. He's a work in progress, yes. But what concerns me is he's starting to regress after his improvements last year. He's throwing those interceptions again (how many did he throw during the last few games of 2015?) and looking mortal.
Fans were pretty up in arms about Cousins getting a one year deal, but Kornheiser said repeatedly on his radio show that you can become irrelevant in this league fast. So it's good that he didn't get signed long term. Because right now, if you want to judge him on those two games, there's no way that he can merit an extension. They would let him walk today if they could.
But a season isn't 2 games. It's 16. The problem is that they play the Giants next week. Already you can see a lot of the magic of last year die down. Everything that was so great last year has worked out horrificly this year. Perhaps that is why nobody's won the division twice in a row for the last few years. It's always been cyclical. Something always happens. In 2013 they didn't repeat because Griffin broke his knee. Today they put themselves in a hole because Cousins can't replicate the play of last year.
Don't get me wrong, he's still making plays somewhat. And the defense did him NO favors last year (remember that defense last year with Breeland that was so good?) It's a team game and it's not all on Cousins. But you'd have to be naive at this point to say he's not playing well. He's not TERRIBLE, he's not like...GOFF bad...but he's not playing elite either like the contract he has to earn. For someone who is playing for a big payday, he seems to have regressed a tad bit.
Let's hope that Gruden and McVay (those same meatheads that cost us multiple red zone opps today) get something going and fix him. Because he is playing mediocre. And he needs to be playing a lot better than that if the Redskins want to defend their crown.
