obviously, my point is just giving up Necas + that trade was about getting an elite player long term, not about trying to win this year. If we can't extend him the trade is a massive failure, even if we somehow win the cup this year.
If they win the cup nothing they did is a failure. Thats the whole point of this.

We could really use a right handed Centre to win some draws on the strong side. Don’t even give yourself a chance when you lose the draw with the goalie pulled

Burns and Walker should be flip flopped until Burns clears his head a bit. Rod won’t do it.
Ghost-Burns is a nightmare pairing that I’d wake up from in a cold sweat, but I think it’s the most logical option.

Ghost-Chatfield would get caved in by any line with size. Rod’s not creating two L/L or R/R pairings.

It’s either that or call up Morrow and play 7 D.

People keep referencing Morrow. That’s unlikely to be a positive thing. That’s a “we’re missing the playoffs so let’s give some people some time” move. A situation where we don’t mind the kid making mistakes and also they aren’t the end of the world kind of mistakes. Burns is at least enough of a vet to handle the cristicism.

Let’s always remember that Burns being exposed is a product of us losing our second pair - which was our top defensive pair. Burns likely isn’t any worse than he was last year, hes just being played in situations Pesce would normally be handling.

I also think we’re going through Necas withdrawals overall. That guy changed the look and pace of the game all by himself. We now have to break out clean as a team every time instead of every few minutes having a free pass as Necas did it all himself.

plus no more top PP time

btw: year one, Burns was a star, LY mediocre, this year garbage.

Canes are correct in not wanting to extend players too long in their 30's but they sure made a mistake on this one.

I’m struggling with Burns on pp1 over Ghost. I’m sure it’s a righty thing but Ghost is more than skilled enough to handle the job.

Wasn't some of his signing business optics at play, too? At the time, landing Burns was a big deal, i.e. getting a guy with a known, well-liked brand to play here and all that comes with that? In addition to the expected on ice results, I think the Rantanen situation is the next iteration of doing it for the overall stature of the business - even if they don't exactly know how to best utilize him within the current roster yet.

I can't imagine they expected quite as much of the will he/won't he sign press and social rumblings to taint his big launch though.
