My HS mus have been a lot like the school Olli is babysitting at. This whole "one or two absences per class" don't seem out of the ordinary to me.

They didn't to me either until I student taught at an urban school. 3-5 per class and the worst class usually had around 10. Class averages were around 60% when I got there. Moved that average up to around 65%

I grew up in a fairly wealthy suburb with one of the best school systems in the area so that makes sense. Buffalo Public Schools are around 50% attendance iirc.

The socioecononic divide is real. During student teaching I had one honors period. That was the only class where absences were rare. Every kid in that class lived in a nice neighborhood and nearly every kid in the underperforming classes lived in a bad area. Sad times.
