If they all aired online even if people didn't get cable it would render cable obsolete

that is why espn used to be free but not anymore. now you have to log in with your credentials

TNT also has a shitload of movies including Wonder Woman for free. But you have to log into your cable provider.

Watching The Great Gatsby (2013) free (with ads) on TNT

Cable is obsolete, lirl.

The only thing keeping it alive is old people and bullshit anti-consumer broadcast agreements

cable is largely relevant because of sports

need to head out we will continue this discussion later

but everything is going ala carte now with like 80 different streaming services.

Live sports are one of the few things keeping cable alive, which is why they're constantly being used as a bargaining chip in cable packages.

You can't just subscribe to the sports channels because they package them up with all of the other channels that few care about and use that package to justify charging a higher price.

Cable packages coerce people into paying for channels they don't want, which is a form of theft.

I'm struggling to think of another industry where "You cannot buy that without also buying these other items because of arbitrary reasons" is deemed acceptable.

Let's not forget being required to rent a cable box and pay a monthly fee on it, with no option to forgo or purchase the box.

Cable will become obsolete soon even with live sports. Streaming services are becoming more and more common for sports. As well as the use of VPNs

Even on the telly itself, Sky Sports used to have the monopoly on English soccerballs and you could only watch whichever lunchtime and late game they decided to show, then BT sport came along and started showing games themselves, and now you can also even watch pretty much any game you want on dodgy Middle Eastern channels like beIN Sports if you use a VPN

I remember when I first got Center Ice, thinking I wouldn't have to stream shit anymore, and I could watch all of the games I wanted.

Well, the first Wings game was blacked out because it was on the NHL Network, which required an additional channel package.

I should have called and cancelled my Center Ice right then, but I probably would have gotten a partial refund

That is infuriating, I can imagine the neighbours calling the cops for a disturbance if that happened to me. My accommodations include a basic cable package. I get whatever Sportsnet shows on the reg channels but they will black out Canadian games in other markets. I may look to either Centre Ice or streaming next season. Will have to do some research to avoid disappointment later.

Center Ice blacks out games in the UK whenever they're live on a really niche specific channel you have to pay for on top of even the Sky Sports package. The kind of channel which shows shit nobody in the UK really watches, so like NHL, NASCAR, Australian Rugby League

At least it used to anyway

As much as I love NFL Redzone, putting it in an add-on channel package is some shady shit.

For 17 weeks in the year, there's one day in the week that you're going to watch this channel for about 7-8 hours. I'm pretty sure the channel doesn't broadcast stuff at other times, so it's literally just 17 days out of the entire year where people would be watching the channel.

I wonder how much money they make off of people signing up for that channel package and not cancelling it in the offseason.

I like to imagine someone so cheap that they would call to subscribe to Redzone on Saturday, then call to cancel it on Monday, doing that every week for 17 weeks

I imagine they'd probably blacklist them for doing that lol

A lot of services have the "pause" feature now but I expect you can only use it a limited number of times

On YouTube TV you could just cancel it after week 17

I paid 10 dollars per month and it was worth it

Unsurprising that you're on big cable's side.

That shit is only legal because telecoms have been lobbying our lawmakers for decades.
Okay I never said I was on big cable's side

First of all

- I can't watch TV without Youtube TV. The antenna doesn't pick up shit here. It picks up NBC FOX and ABC. No CBS.

- Youtube TV is getting more and more expensive as they add more channels but there is also unlimited DVR and the ability to watch online, I have 3 TV's connected to the internet and they all access Youtube TV seamlessly. Plus as mentioned before FX and TNT put up a shitload of movies online for free with ads, which is acceptable for me.

- I am on the side of just being able to access content whether it is by cable or app. I have multiple streaming services too which I use to watch TV. It's more complex than me being part of nWo or some "Team Cable" WWE tag team. I'm NOT on the side of piracy though because it is not convenient to watch anything pirated when you could just pay for a cloud stream off a legal service. #TeamCloud #TeamWatchAMovieForFreeOnGoogleTVwithAds

- I'm not on cable's side and I see so much crap I barely watch on Youtube TV. I only keep it around for sports. Without it I'd be unable to watch any sports on TV.

"Use an illegal streaming site"

Like you can just pull those up on your TV.

"Use a HTPC or Kodi"

Or I could just use voice activation to turn the TV on a certain channel and it takes 3 seconds
