Another random thought

The youtube algorithm recommended me a "BBC Earth" video today of some ants eating a crab alive from the inside out

Absolutely terrifying stuff.

I then in the related videos saw an American version of a similar type of documentary and the contrast between that and the BBC one was exactly like the difference between British and American Gordon Ramsay shows.

Soft soothing voice over in the British one with no music. BIG DRAMATIC LOUD MUSIC and people in a studio shouting at you about what's happening in the American one

it's so much more dramatized than the BBC version it's hilarious

On Gordon's BBC specials even "Gordon Behind Bars" he is nice and friendly

in US they overdramatize everything for hilarious moments. Don't think you'll find the "best Gordon moments" on British TV lol

I remember watching the BBC versions and Ramsay himself did the narration as he did for F Word

In America some announcer guy does it and they throw in so much tense music lol

On the British version he went to help genuinely struggling businesses and it was proper reality TV

In the US version it's people like Crazy Amy who wanted to prove all the "haters" wrong and the Australian burger man who thought there was a Yelp conspiracy against them. Or there'd be at least one deluded owner/partner while the other one realised that they were shite

The producers probably picked the belligerent people who would make for the best TV. It was the Amy's Baking Company episode which went viral and really put the show on the map

Speaking of Ramsay shows, the first few seasons of Masterchef kept the reality nonsense somewhat tame, but the show gets progressively worse every season.

It's really noticeable when you binge it and suddenly there are product placements everywhere, for example.

Granted, it's the American version, so the show always felt like more of a reality show than a cooking competition.

it's a good chance for home chefs to show their skills

i don't really have much critique of the show and think it's the best out of all the shows he does. HK is the same old Ramsay yelling at people shit and KN can be a bit cliche with the same model. Ramsay actually acts human in MC

Ramsay is going to look more human when he doesn't have contestants to yell at, which is probably why MC leans into the reality stuff, like how they ask questions to provoke two people into getting angry at each other in a competition where their dishes have no bearing on each other's.
