I'm no expert but in no way does it make sense imo to spend $6000-7000 to rebuild the engine on a car with $10,000 resale value. I would sell it with the caveat that you disclose the situation and drop the price 4k or so. I've found that if you screw people, what goes around comes around, so I would let people know what's up even if it makes you less money because you never know how a scammed person will react.@TheGreenTBer My scoobie has bad rings I think. It's drinking a ton of oil.
Should I sell it or try to fix it? Vroom offered private-party value, but I feel bad selling it knowing it's f***ed. I could sell it privately with the caveat, probably less 4k.
Fixing it is about 6-7k to rebuild with a new longblock.
I have no idea what to do. It's not really cheaper to buy a new car. I also don't want to put 7 grand into a car that's worth like 10k on a good day. I iz financially lost.
We could definitely go without it. Selling it isn't a problem other than I enjoy driving it.I'm no expert but in no way does it make sense imo to spend $6000-7000 to rebuild the engine on a car with $10,000 resale value. You work from home. Do you need another car besides the beater truck and your wife's vehicle? Can you guys hold out without an additional car for a while?

I bought a newer truck that was in worse shape so at least it's safe for the kiddo. I decided to pass over some early 2000s ones in nice condition because their safety ratings were horrendous. It's perfectly acceptable to use it for a few months.
Woof. It's $3.70 or so for 87 octane right now for us and now that I don't have my WRX anymore I don't remember what 93 is.Financials aside, I wouldn't mind picking up something a little nicer to drive, though. Plus the truck gets like 10MPG and gas is nearing $5/gal here. Can afford it but hate it.
I just...like you have a small kid and I don't want your family to be in a situation where a PO'ed scammed guy pulls up to your house in a lifted pickup truck with a gun or something, and that is not an unrealistic scenario in CO imo. It's just not work the risk to me. I'd list it for like $7K OBO or something. You're probably right. Listing it private-party for 6k instead of 10 or 11 is the right way forward.
I bought a 5th gen 4runner for just this scenario (when my WRX takes a shit - wanted something nice but still cool to drive while it was down) and then my wife stole it and sold her forester to her sister.Makes sense.
We are a 1-car house right now. Upcoming job is WFH unless I need to go do sensitive work on-base.
I want a new car so badly but that's the midlife crisis talking. I'll probably get a beater eventually though.
