USA overtaking Canada

Yes. In women’s hockey the US (imo) ahead of Canada. Thought we were talking guys?

I'm American but I consider myself thoughtful and Canada worse case is equal to US women, but its uber competitive, just like the men. Same countries same sport why should the players sex make any difference?

The top male athletes in the USA have several other sports they choose over hockey. The top male athletes in Canada choose hockey. For women there’s little to no money in hockey. Many top athletes choose tennis, or golf. That and making babies or having a career outside of sport. There’s a huge difference between opportunities to earn a living in women’s sport compared to men. In the States you guys have Baseball, Football, Basketball ahead of hockey for the best athletes to find their way to. It’s hockey first up here for the best athletes.

Yup. Who are the best USA players at each position? Eichel, Tkatchuk, ? , Quinn Hughes, McAvoy, Helley.
Yes these are really good players. But are they the elite of the league? This lack of the elite superstars is why the US (imo) is far behind Canada and still chasing a couple Eorupean countries. Do the Americans have a Pastrnak, Draisatl, Kucherov?

Lol, Patrick Kane was NHL MVP. Pastrnak has never been NHL MVP. Incidentally I am a Bruins fan so I know Pastrnak's capability very well.

Right now only country that could beat the US in a large sample size is Canada.

Kane was awesome, but that was more than a decade ago. It’s very rare the US produces a player of his level.

You have soccer, baseball, basketball and football players in the major leagues, just stop it. You won 4N because of Binnington, not your Holy TrInity, just stop your BS.

I'm barely 30, but I've been hearing this since at least the early 2000's. No chance.

In terms of hockey's popularity, as a Canadian who has lived in many U.S states for work, school, etc it's non existent compared to Canada aside from Minnesota. Cost wise, it's also just as expensive if not more in the U.S.

Heck personally, L.A has had the Kings since what - the 60's? And there's still no dedicated hockey store here or go to rink. Everything's far (which is generally a socal issue itself), but the closet main hockey store to me with stock is Pure Hockey and that's 50 miles away and they only carry premium gear. In Canada, you can go anywhere find an assortment of hockey stores with gear for many price ranges. It just isn't comparable, which is saying something when you consider the population difference of each nation

Massachusetts is very similar to Minnesota. What are you talking about?

Of course we have those sports but the top athletes gravitate to hockey because it’s the big game up here.
I think you need to accept the USA needs to first get ahead of a couple Euro countries in hockey before even think about catching up to Canada.

Where is Binnington from and who did he play for at the 4N? You never answered that lol.

I just think you need to start doing a better job of trolling...lol.

2/50 states doesn’t disprove my statement

You made a declarative statement and said Minnesota was the only state and you were wrong. Again why are Canada and US Women's teams so competitive? Because the pool of talent is close, just like the men are.

Massachusetts has had a hockey culture for as long as Minnesota. I should know, as I played HS hockey around the time the BU 4 did, my nephew won an EMass title in 1978 and my son played in The Super 8 in 2003. My brother was recruited by Northeastern in 1969. Yeah, I'm getting up there (70) but I have seen massive improvements in hockey in Massachusetts but also in many regions of the country. Its at the point now that they are close enough that Canada has to play close to their best to win.

You're right, I should have included Massachusetts. There's a couple of other states I left out too, not intentionally. But, when comparing the US hockey culture vs Canada's, Minnesota's is the closest 1 for 1 comparison for how mad the general population is for the sport. Not just enthusiasts

Yes, but the US is a much richer country than Canada.
Exactly! This is why Canadian players have that extra fighting gear. They grow up playing on outdoor ice fighting -40. US players, as you point out, grow up in the wealthy country on fancy indoor ice.,

I already explained my issue with Fatass is his reason why Canada won was supposedly his holy trinity not Binnington.
The score is 3-2 in favour of Canada, did Binner score all 3 of those? Wow, the Americans are truly trash then, and still took that L either way. The more you know. Lol.

If so that would be the first time a point youve made could ever be validated, since Binner is the sole reason we won and all :sarcasm:

I would say that currently since 2020 Canada has begun to outpace the US again. 2015-2019 was obviously really good for the US and I'd term their "golden generation" but they haven't kept up their impressive rate of players in the draft and quality. Not to say there aren't good US prospects, 2023 had the BC/NCAA guys, 2022 had also quite a good group of guys.

Players drafted in the NHL Draft- source EP nationality* take with grain of salt
2024 CAN 89 USA 39- 4 First rounders
2023 CAN 87 USA 49
2022 CAN 89 USA 48
2021 CAN 89 USA 45
2020 CAN 72 USA 52

2025 looks like the OHL/WHL are having strong years and the US will probably have 4-6 maybe slightly more taken in the first round. Gonna be another big year for Canada though.

Obviously this is a simplified look at comparing the nations and some later taken guys will rise to premiere players but I thin it's a decent predictor of the future considering. USA Has done very well in the WJCs but I don't think a short tournament with different recruiting styles really matters much in the grand scheme.

Also Canada has had a really good pipeline from 2023-2027 considering future/possible elite guys like Dupont, McKenna, Bedard, Celebrini, Fantilli, Schafer, Misa. Those first 5 are projecting in my opinion as pretty likely to play on a Canada mens team at a significant role one day.

Schultz in 2028 is looking promising.

Canada does need to do better developing goalies and defenders.

Feels like this is the USA's best generation to win a gold in a best on best and the gap between Canada and the US may actually increase considering recent numbers.

Why would you compare an individual sport to a team sport. Most of those were already popular sports before the ones you mentioned. Tiger didn’t make golf popular, it was always popular in the U.S.
Some of them were popular.

The Americans dominating them made them even more popular.

Come back with some facts or just go to the corner and cry about being wrong.

If I remember correctly, the USA won a best on best in the mid 90’s.

You don’t get to just make up stupid fake facts and then demand facts to prove you wrong. You made a bs claim. You got called out and you couldn’t back it up. Own it.
