USA overtaking Canada

Taking in consideration the expensive prices for kids to play hockey today, how hockey is losing tradition in Quebec (The Meca of Hockey), and how hockey is growing in the United States, do you think that in the next 20 years, the USA national team will became the biggest potence in the international hockey world?
Why would you start a thread like this, other than to cause fighting?

Threads like this, ones that have been done to death, should be banned.

Shame and "Ignore".

I just looked up u25 in NHL

Sweden has Sandin, Raymond, Edvinsson, Eklund, Carlsson as top dogs.

Finland has Kakko, Lundell, Kotkaniemi, Räty as top dogs.

What are you basing on that Finland is producing more top dogs than Sweden?

Damn bro, I hit a nerve huh? I like how you went with U25 when I clearly said "FIN has done very well in the last decade".

Very convenient of you to set an age parameter that would exclude Barkov, Rantanen, Hintz, Aho, Lindell, and Heiskanen, all of whom except one are still under 30 and have another 7-10 years in their careers.

Im fine. Just curious what you base it on.

What makes Barkov, Hintz, Lundell and Aho better than Bratt, Nylander, Forsberg and Raymond?

Rantanen and Heiskanen is better than any Swede, that i admit.

How is Lindell better than Dahlin, Ekholm, Brodin, Hedman, Rasmus Andersson and Forsling?

US has been losing ground to the Canada in recent drafts. This year, around 15 Canadians are expected to go top 20, compared with 1 or 2 Americans
Yeah, it's a bad draft year for Americans. It's also a pretty bad draft year in general, so unclear how much of that will end up carrying over. Lately, there's been a pretty big run of arguably the steal of the 2nd round being an American (under-drafted? coincidence?) so we'll see if there's anything to that as well.

Overtaking Canada means becoming as dominant as Canada has been. Which is unlikely. Once America wins a tournament they can say they are finally on the same level.

Can it happen.. yes
Has it happened ... No
Could it happen in future.. maybe

For me to conclusively say the USA have taken over.. they would have to win the next 2 best on best Olympics and the world Cup.

I think it won't be possible until the USA produces a generational talent.

If a guy comes along that wins multiple Scoring titles and MVPs, I think that will be the tipping point that drives interest in the US to a point where there will start producing more talent than Canada in future generations.

Americans don't care about something until an American is the best and then it generates a tonne of interest. If they can produce a player that is the best it will snowball from there.

Really shallow take and not reflective.

American hockey fans will be more excited to see Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr playing for their favorite NHL team and grow interest that way, as opposed to an American Connor McDavid playing for Edmonton just because he happened to be from Minnesota originally.

Reminder that czech has won more "best on best" tournaments then usa
Yup. Who are the best USA players at each position? Eichel, Tkatchuk, ? , Quinn Hughes, McAvoy, Helley.
Yes these are really good players. But are they the elite of the league? This lack of the elite superstars is why the US (imo) is far behind Canada and still chasing a couple Eorupean countries. Do the Americans have a Pastrnak, Draisatl, Kucherov?

Are you kidding?

Just go look up popularity boosts in the respective sports dominated by Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, Lance Armstrong etc.

An American dominating a sport brings a massive media blitz to the USA that reaches people who aren't even sports fans.

Its not even comparable.

Why would you compare an individual sport to a team sport. Most of those were already popular sports before the ones you mentioned. Tiger didn’t make golf popular, it was always popular in the U.S.

It’s not equal now though. The USA doesn’t have the elite talent to match McDavid, McKinnon, Makar.

Why are the US and Canadian women closer genius, same countries. Difference in 4N was Binnington, take your Canadian goggles off.

Your post is a reminder of what comes out of fat asses.

Yes. In women’s hockey the US (imo) ahead of Canada. Thought we were talking guys?

The 2025 rankings are not officially out yet, but I think if you do the math on how they work, USA will be #1 and Canada #2, because the USA won the women's world championships. Canada was ranked #1 (and the USA #2) for the rankings that came out for 2024.

I'm barely 30, but I've been hearing this since at least the early 2000's. No chance.

In terms of hockey's popularity, as a Canadian who has lived in many U.S states for work, school, etc it's non existent compared to Canada aside from Minnesota. Cost wise, it's also just as expensive if not more in the U.S.

Heck personally, L.A has had the Kings since what - the 60's? And there's still no dedicated hockey store here or go to rink. Everything's far (which is generally a socal issue itself), but the closet main hockey store to me with stock is Pure Hockey and that's 50 miles away and they only carry premium gear. In Canada, you can go anywhere find an assortment of hockey stores with gear for many price ranges. It just isn't comparable, which is saying something when you consider the population difference of each nation
