The Hemsky trade was the least weird of the many acquisitions he made when we were far out of the playoffs, as at least we didn't have our 1st that year (thanks to the awful Ryan trade).

Adding Campoli and a rental Comrie in 2009 when we were bottom 5 was hilarious. Insane timing and it might have cost Murray dearly on draft day in not getting his guy Kadri.

Trying to improve the goalie position in 2011 by trading Tank Commander Elliott for Anderson ended up working out, but people need to factor in that doing the trade when he did ended up boosting the team in the standings from 2nd worst to 5th worst, probably costing us Landeskog/Huberdeau.

Did the same thing in 2016 with the Phaneuf trade too. Dude was completely incapable of sitting on his hands and letting the team suck when the season was already lost. Ended up sabotaging his own draft position a lot of the time because he couldn't stand to see the team lose.
I gotta disagree with a lot here. Murray sometimes would buy when the season was lost, but other moves were him actively trying to fill gaps in the roster and they worked more times than not. Getting us Anderson gave us stability in net, something we didn't have in a while.

Getting Phaneuf let us have a solid top 4, even if he should've gotten the Leafs to retain more.

Even the Ryan trade can only be called bad in hindsight. We gave up market value for someone who had hit 30g several times and was a legit top-line winger. If Ryan stayed as a 30g, 60 point winger, that trade doesn't look bad but nobody could've predicted him falling off the way he did.

But the idea that a mid-late 1st was an excellent return for Lehner just doesn't add up.
The team didn't exactly support Lehner. The dude was experiencing mental health issues and Sens management wasn't exactly the most supportive. The team failed him and he wasn't going to succeed in Ottawa given the off ice support Lehner may have needed

He’s really leaning into the “steady” Steve persona.

You don’t really sense much urgency from anyone involved in this organization. Management, coaches or players.

To be fair to Staios, Dorion left him with hardly any assets or money to work with to improve the lineup.

At the same time I think Staios needs to understand where the fans are coming from. Been 7 years with no playoffs. Patience from the fanbase is low for a reason.

I think he's just giving diplomatic nothing answers and then he'll do whatever he's gonna do. No need to create drama and make it seem like the solutions aren't in house.

After he got Ullmark, he said multiple times that upgrading goaltending was priority #1 heading in to the offseason. Before that, it was all about having all the confidence in the world in their goaltending, including Korpisalo. The only crack was that he said they knew they needed to be better, but was also confident they would be. I was worried he was happy with status quo.

Brady goes off “what the F is with Brady getting so fired up”
Team stays steady, not too high, not too low “no urgency in this team”

The team is exactly where everyone hoped it would be despite injuries to extremely key guys.
I love “Steady no drama” Steve, and the culture he is building.

I think we need to keep this in mind.

Expectations were we'd be fighting for a wild card spot. We currently have the best Pts% of teams outside of divisional spots, so not only are we in the range we expected to be in, we're in the top end of that range.

This,
- without Ullmark the last 8 games, not to mention his slow start and early injury.
- Perron out most of the season, expected to be a top 9 contributor along with Amadio now out.
- Zub missing more than half the season to date, resulting in Sanderson struggling while paired with Hamonic,

There's room for improvement, but the often criticized depth seems to actually be holding up. Hamonic has been acceptable, albeit over slotted in the top 4 role. JBD has had some ups and downs, but that's to be expected from your 7th D. Matinpalo has stepped in and looked like a legit NHL player. Up front guys like Ostapchuk, Reinhardt, and even Highmore have stepped in and played well enough for the most part. We have 4 forwards out and 2 D, and just beat Dallas with our callup goalie in net. Not bad.

Good Post. As long as they stay in the race anything can happen & so far they are exactly where some of us thought they should be. Hopefully, with some of those guys getting healthy they will give Ott a push in the second half of the season when they will need it.

Exactly. We only found out that talks about Ullmark took place before the trade deadline but was only finalized before the draft. It was a done deal once the fans found out. SS definitely plays his cards close to the vest.
