Unpopular Wrestling Opinions

I don't think that anyone dislikes 1996-1997 heel Austin, which is probably the best Austin. People dislike post Wrestlemania 17 heel Austin, but he was still good as a heel. It just wasn't what most wanted.

agreed

I also say injuries derailed the 2000s heel run.

The 2 man power trip was good stuff, but fell apart when HHH blew out his quad. Then as Austin was getting going as a singles heel he has his neck injury and is out of the ring for a year.

A healthy Austin makes that heel run work, especially leading into Invasion

Healthy or not that heel run was awful for business. Losing millions of viewers, losing thousands in house show attendance, there was no salvaging that heel turn whether he was healthy or not. It was awful for business and a major flop.

His 2001 ring work was the best ring work of his run on top, though, which says a lot considering how hurt he was and that he was borrowed time by that point.

Seth Rollins is a boring champion.

Ronda Rousey leaving the woman’s division has made it feel way less important.

Agreed on both. Rollins should be a mid-carder. While Ronda was pretty meh in the ring, her leaving takes away a main eventer from the division.

To me, they missed the boat not calling an audible on the Austin "heel turn" at Invasion.

While the execution was flawed, his heel turn at WM 17 was what the character needed to freshen up, and it worked. So well in fact that the whiny comedic heel Austin was getting over.

When Vince did the whole "I need the old Stone Cold" bit leading into invasion, the fans were ready to embrace Austin again. Go back and watch the ending of the Raw in Philly where it's the Alliance running roughshod over the WWF guys and Austin shows up in his truck and turns the tide. The pop he got was off-the-charts, one of the biggest I can remember. They should of changed plans right there and had Austin as the lead babyface against the Alliance. I would of used Jericho as the lead-heel (given his WCW/ECW background), instead they tried to recreate the shock of Hogan/NWO by having the biggest name turn.

In an ideal world WWE doesn't cheap out and brings in some of WCW's top guys who were sitting out. Give WCW just Sting and Goldberg even and it looks legitimate. I'd like to see Steiner too. Jericho would have been a good wrestler to have in the middle of things with fans not knowing where he stands. It's unfortunate that wrestlers in similar situations like Guerrero, Benoit, Saturn, Malenko weren't really available or used. It would be easy to see Jericho flipping sides to the Alliance out of jealousy over Austin's gigantic pop upon his return.

*Providence (i was in that crowd going nuts, haha)

Im also gonna pump the tires of my home crowd a bit and say we are always a hot crowd (see Daniel Bryan turning on Wyatt). There's my unpopular opinion, Providence brings one of the more consistently hot crowds around.

For some reason I thought it was Philly (maybe the ECW thing).

That must of been crazy to be in the audience for. Good times.

Either way, you could tell the fanbase was all ready to take Austin back into their loving arms even in the few Raw's leading up to this one. Just one of many mistakes made during the Invasion angle.

Some old school opinions that are unpopular.

Vince should have turned Hogan heel when the Mega Powers broke up. Hogan was getting stale after 5 years and turning Savage heel was too predictable. Hogan being managed by Bobby Heenan would have been unbelievable.

I enjoyed the Steve Austin/Savio Vega feud when Austin first arrived in the WWF. Those two had great in ring chemistry, which led to some stiff, believable matches.

The Four Horsemen should have been retired for good after Tully and Arn left for the WWF in 1988. Flair, Arn, Tully and Windham were the best combination of Horsemen and no Horsemen combo after came close to matching them.

Early 90s WCW, say 90-93, was good.

A lot of current WWE wrestlers aren't having their personalities stifled by WWE, they just don't have interesting personalities. WWE doesn't do them any favours but personality tends to shine through even with bad booking.

I’ll throw one out there. The Shield is overrated as a stable. Now thats not to say I did not like the shield, I did, I just think they got put up on way too high of a pedestal by fans.
I think you're right, although I was never huge into the Shield even when they started moving up and was never really into any of their reunions. They tried to reunite too quickly and the triple threat match should've been saved for a much bigger PPV considering all three had successfully been made into top acts.

Before Hogan showed up WCW was largely still good, then it went to absolute shit.

I don't know that I agree with you on Hogan going heel initially, but then your post made me think. Probably would have been cool if they did it as they did, but then 2-3 months in the camera caught Hogan and Elizabeth together and then made Hogan heel. Of course Elizabeth would have had to have gone with him then, but that would have been a big shock.

Agreed on the Horsemen to an extent, but then we'd have missed out on the Horsemen with Benoit. Too many Horsemen generally, but there was some stability there towards the end. They just had them losing too easily to the NWO.

Cody Rhodes has been the highlight of AEW so far.

Best stories. More impactful matches. Most over performer.

No one comes even close.

Is that an unpopular opinion though? For Cody will probably one of AEW's top stars for a very long time.

What is probably unpopular is me saying he has been far and away the BEST in AEW so far. No competition IMO.

I cannot wait to see how the story with MJF plays out.

That's fair. Hollywood Hogan was good as a cowardly heel though, and WCW did get good again below Hogan's level.

He's had the best booking and presentation, probably by far. I wish he'd stay off the internet, but I can't hold that against AEW. I think that Rhodes was a bad fit on the indy scene but was underrated in WWE.

Hogan would have never given the OK for that in a million years. He barely wanted to turn heel in WCW.

I'll throw out one that carried over from a draft discussion I was having. Ted Dibiase wasn't good in the ring. Great character and gimmick, but I can't find a match to suggest he was good in the ring.
