Yes both BG1&2 are Bioware. Their RPG series in order of chronological appearance are:

Balders Gate
Neverwinter Nights*
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic*
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Dragon Age
*sequels made by Obsidian

BG was the highlight of my gaming life and I was like 7. I have played that game through so many damn times. Love that game.

I play RPGs to play a game, not watch a movie. IIRC, in the first hour, there were bar patrons, some wolves and a Griffin. Before and after each of those fights (and seemingly every 5 minutes), there was a cutscene.

And a lot of the time, the cutscene was unnecessary.

Cutscene - "Oh, there's the Griffin."
Griffin fight
Cutscene - "You defeated the Griffin! Let's go to the next location."

You can always skip the cutscene.

The Order 1886 isn't as bad as people said it was, That's not to say it's worth 60$ like they orginally charged for it when it was new it's not, FAR FAR from it but it's not the pile of **** I was told it was

It's almost like they were trying to introduce you to the world and its characters.

Theres no point in getting good at witcher 3, since a enemy 3 levels higher than you is essentially invincible.

Any enemy that shows its level is absolutely beatable. Come on.

Well, first, it's the 3rd game of the series. The world/characters should be rather well established at that point. Second, if they really felt the need to re-introduce the characters, it certainly could have been done better than cramming cutscenes after cutscene in the beginning of the game.

.

This. They are building the characters up for the storyline. This is one of the best games I have played in regards to storyline and character depth and progression. But to each their own, its probably not for everyone.

About 4-5 hours in, I enjoy the cutscenes but it definitely isn't for everyone. There's definitely tons of extraneous storyline and characters that you stumble upon. In fact that witch girl you meet I thought was a main character, until I killed her an hour later. There's a million dialogue options for even the most minor npc interactions. Nice for world building but I can see how it would be draining. That said, the game developers did a very good job giving geralt a "get to the point" option in about 70% of the conversations.

she can be an ally and will be around later in the game if you choose not to kill her. That is the beauty of the game imo. everything you do has a different outcome based on your decisions and personal interaction with other main characters.

Geralt is the only major character in the prologue of the game who really is well established. Was Vesemir? Was Yen? Was Ciri? The environment in the North was not established previously, either (except that everyone is racist, and they did that with one group of men in the tavern which introduced you to one of the ways the game deals with conflict).

Cutscenes in a game which has a large narrative focus is not exactly uncommon.

Why not do both? That's my plan.

Currently (very slowly) working through Horizon, but that NieR demo was incredible. Looking forward to picking that one up.

Of course right now there's Mass Effect to deal with, so the real casualty right now is my backlog of games.

Horizon us the best game so far this year and anyone who played Nier instead ****ed up.

Weird opinion to have since you probably haven't played Horizon, and not sure what the point of downplaying it to make Nier better is but alright..

Mmm.. I didn't do anything to downplay Horizon. That was an entirely self-contained English clause. Nier is better than Horizon. That does nothing to suggest that Horizon is bad. Just like saying "Horizon was the third best open world game to be released between February 28th and March 7th" also does nothing to suggest that Horizon is bad, just that other games are better.

Played probably under 10 hours of it before I shelved it. Gorgeous game with the same fatal flaw that most western open world games outside of Arkham and Mordor have: the combat isn't good enough. I got on board when I heard people say that it was at least more fun to play than The Witcher, and while that much seems true so far I'm just not sure if it's a noticeable enough improvement. How low of a bar that was must have slipped my mind at the time.

Nier is almost nothing like dark souls

(And existed first anyways).

Although he's probably thinking about Nioh... which is also better than Horizon, actually.

The combat of the game is what kept me going. Shooting gigantic machines with different methods while they try to crush me? Sign me right up!

The story is what is meh.

I agree with Blueline. I like RPGs to actually focus on Role Playing. Not thinly veiled action games with RPG elements. I mean, that's the RP actually stands for in the first place.

I was numb by the end of my first bandit camp and killed most of the machines by whistling them over one at a time.

The big machines were more engaging but not exactly what I would call fluid.

If this is your thing I know a game you might like.

No. The characters they were establishing were barely in the other games. And for good reason

What? That's one of the best things about Witcher 3. Enemies several levels higher than you are actually beatable.

I'd have to double check but according to my memory I took on a level 12 wyvern nest clearing quest when I was level 8 and the wyverns were one hit kills with an insane hit box.

There's a level range which affects Geralt and the enemies damage which basically makes them health sponges. Not a fan. It's basically a lazy design decision to cover up their really poor character system and desire to please those chasing TES type open maps. Many better ways they could have handled it.
