University Cup 2025

The 2hr delay threw them off - messiest game I've seen them play this year (passes bounding off sticks, odd bounces off boards, etc). It looked like the ice was warm (the building was warm) and the puck was pouncing everywhere. I've never seen UNB players cramp-up in the 3rd period.

As Gardiner said in 2012 after the loss to UWO - if you come to these events enough, things are going to happen (law of averages).

Kudos to Ottawa - they did what they needed to do to stick around.

While I don't think the conditions only had an effect on UNB, they seemed to have more of an effect on them vs Ottawa.

When UNB loses, conditions only affect UNB it seems.

Earlier in this thread I pointed out the odd dimensions of the TD Place ice surface. Old boards, weird bounces, very sharp corners. They affected all teams equally. I suspected ex-OHLers might have a slight advantage due to familiarity with the ice surface. But, you could see pucks ricocheting in ways that players were not expecting.

Keep in mind that TD Place is NOT UOttawa's home rink, so they were in a visitors dressing room the same as UNB, they were just as far from their residences as UNB was from their hotel, and they were no more familiar with the ice surface than UNB ... especially after both teams practiced there this week. There are no conditions that would have affected UNB worse than Ottawa.

If UNB players were cramping up, that's really on the coaching staff and trainers. TD Place is across the street from a grocery store ... with a delay and warm conditions, send your staff across the street to stock up on whatever you need to stay hydrated.

UdeM struggling against CON in the 2nd and 3rd.

Leading 2-1, they give up 2 in less than a minute. Down 1 with 10 minutes to go.

EN goal makes it 4-2.

CON the better team overall. Darveau kept UdeM in for 2 periods.

OUA with 3 teams advancing, despite some predictions.

I just caught the tail end of the 2nd and then followed the 3rd. Concordia was the better team during the time I was watching, fully deserving of the win.

The boards sure played a role though. Funny bounce on the 2-2 goal, then threw off the Moncton goalie's timing on the 3-2 winner. I'll bet he was expecting that rim to get further out than it ended up.

So far the games have been entertaining and close, with at least 1 "upset".

Too bad both AUS teams are out, but I'll still be able to enjoy the remaining games.

The hockey will be fun regardless who’s in it . I’m planning to watch everything that doesn’t go head to head with UNB girls (if they win, I’m not watching the god damn 5th place game)

I’m kinda cheering for Queens tonight , for all the shit that’s been talked over the years about the OUA (from myself included) it would be pretty wild to see the final 4 all come from the OUA.
I gotta go with them as well, because of Gibby coaching. If Dave Adolph was still with the Dogs it would be a tough choice.

Random tidbit on the women’s side .
I played minor hockey with UNB assistant coach Taylor Maschmyer (formerly Taylor Dale , Bronson’s wife) . Up until the age of male puberty she was the best minor hockey player I have ever seen, including Spencer Smallman and Peter Reynolds , she was the captain of the AAA Peweee Canadiens.

I’ll definitely be cheering for her this weekend

Yup, they got the bounces.

So we are guaranteed the first National Final since 2012 (McGill/Western) to not feature either UNB or Alberta...and only the second one since 2003.

Unless Ottawa wins, it will be the first time since UQTR in 2001 that a team has won the title without having to go through either UNB or Alberta.

Really hoping we don’t get overtime lol, I’ve watched so much hockey the last 36 hours ….. I think I have a 13 hour sleep in me at this point
