UNB Reds Thread (Part5)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server
The AUS is a clear level or two below the other conferences in women’s hockey. Maybe in men’s hockey too lol…
I could be crazy and I would have said this 3 days ago but the AUS isn’t as good as it was 15 years ago and I think that played into UNB’s 30-0 season (I know they didn’t allow a goal at nationals)…

Some of the teams 04 ,2016 X , 07 Moncton , 2010 SMU , etc… been a while since we’ve seen a non UNB team that good

The talent level in the conference has definitely decreased since the pandemic.
Even beyond specific teams. I think of the best AUS players I’ve seen and all of them were 10+ years ago… Hennigar, Tremblay , Maillet , Kevin Young , Ferguson , Hotham x2 , Rancourt , Stanley, take your pick… I don’t think we’ve had anyone that good since Maillet…

The pandemic is a factor , I wonder if NHL expansion has had an impact on the highest end of the talent pool as well, after every expansion - 20+ new NHL jobs , 20+ new AHL jobs , everyone gets pushed up a little bit. Not sure if that’s played any role but a thought …

$59.99 for a QMJHL playoff pass on CHLtv .

Not the biggest fan of Major Junior but I’m tempted to subscribe to partake in the annual ritual of watching a Gardiner MacDougall powerhouse play for a championship… Gonna try to get down for some games but not sure how many nights I want to set aside for a trip to Moncton….

Wish they had team specific passes because I have literally zero interest in watching anyone besides Moncton , especially being a few weeks away from binging NHL playoff hockey…

I know it’s hard for non UNB people to feel bad for anyone involved with UNB but I do feel bad for Hennigar , obviously every coach is facing the same rule changes but what a time to take over the program.. Coming off a 30-0 season with your pipeline going away.

I will say if it wasn’t MacDougall I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have guide the program into unchartered waters , he genuinely bleeds UNB Red.

I just hope people don't blame him for this weekend. If you told me last summer they would be 37-1-1 heading into the UCup I would have called you crazy. I didn't want to say it beforehand for fear of jinxing them...but if they had won this weekend we would be talking about this year's team as their second best team ever.

The best team doesn't always win. I've said this many times, but UNB fans are spoiled. They expect to win every game 10-0 and if they lose a game or 2 they want to have a hockey summit.

I don't feel bad for Hennie. He inherited a very good team and went 28-2, finishing 17 points ahead of 2nd place UdeM and swept the playoffs.
I also don't blame him for the loss. That's hockey. But I can see some UNB "fans" blaming him and that's sad.

I still think the second best UNB team ever was the 2007-2008 team that lost in the national final to Alberta .

At the very least they had the best line in CIS history. Two best players in team history both in that lineup.

You can watch Gavin McKenna for free…wonder if the OHL and QMJHL eventually follow this model.

On the note of the MHL.

Any of you that have been to a Red Wings game have most likely crossed paths with Stalen… Nice to see the Ramblers bring him out… He was unquestionably the biggest Wings fan in the city.

Does the Gleaner even still have sports reporters/original local content? It’s been years since I’ve had a subscription.
Doesn’t seem it, I canceled years ago but somehow still have access to the online section (despite confirming it was cancelled)… they post the most basic stuff but it’s basically scores and basic stats , no opinion pieces or anything in depth.

Sad because growing up it was amazing , I was like 5 years old reading about the baby Habs every morning lol.

I used to love the UNB recaps because they would include post-game quotes, which weren’t available anywhere else.

And of course, Bruce Hallihan’s AUS previews.

I don’t follow the MHL at all, but I did see Pictou beat out Summerside 4 games to 1 in their first round series. That’s a pretty massive upset.
I’d be shocked Edmundston doesn’t win. Probably the best MHL team I’ve seen in the brief time Freddy had a team…

I can’t imagine it would ever happen but I’d be curious what the Q would look like there but the rink would be a bit small without an expansion …. Although full it is above the lower teams in the Q attendance wise , they have by far the largest fan base , the best facilities , best everything …. In fact kind of like a team we are all familiar with..

If you are craving live hockey , Midget AAA playoffs going on right now… Freddy v Moncton

Don Johnson cup in Cocagne in April , Wildcats + MHL playoffs on my radar as possible things to go to for a hockey fix….

Honestly the only thing I dislike about CIS hockey is how early the season ends (I understand why it does) , leaves me craving live hockey.
