I didn’t expect them to lose to Ryerson….but that team was never winning the national title that year.I knew UNB was losing that game when a group of women from Fredericton drove into the parking lot playing “We are the Champions”

Everyone, including me had UNB penciled in to win. Ryerson gave them very little and UNB did not go to the net. That's all it was.I knew UNB was losing that game when a group of women from Fredericton drove into the parking lot playing “We are the Champions”
That was a weak team by UNB standards , lost Boland and Guay when the league shutdown , had to add Chris Becker to the roster and he actually dressed in games … BUT , the young players on that team were the core of the 30-0 season.I didn’t expect them to lose to Ryerson….but that team was never winning the national title that year.
They had already lost the majority of their top players from the 2019/20 powerhouse team during the lost season…and then to lose Boland/Guay at the break they just didn’t have the depth/scoring. They were severely offensively challenged the second half of that season and in the playoffs, averaging only 2.7 goals per game in those ten games. That was a weak team by UNB standards , lost Boland and Guay when the league shutdown , had to add Chris Becker to the roster and he actually dressed in games … BUT , the young players on that team were the core of the 30-0 season.
I will also say , somewhat OT …. Kade Landry is the most underrated player to ever go through this program , guy was an elite skater , put up crazy numbers for a guy who didn’t get Top PP mins. They had already lost the majority of their top players from the 2019/20 powerhouse team during the lost season…and then to lose Boland/Guay at the break they just didn’t have the depth/scoring. But like you said, the rookies on that team + Gilmour + maybe their best recruiting class ever that summer has led to three incredible seasons since.
UNB wasn't the same team, after Boland,Guay... went pro during pandemic shutdown. That levelled the field, but it also affected other teams as well.If they can do what Ryerson did at Acadia in 2022.
Gardiner always said the first game at Nationals was the toughest. Once you got through that it was smoother sailing. But, unless the Ottawa goalie has the game of his life, and UNB gets into penalty trouble, I don't see them blowing this one. Here we go again, with UNB gloom and doom.![]()
Yup - everyone is a bit tense and it becomes a 'tight' game.Gardiner always said the first game at Nationals was the toughest. Once you got through that it was smoother sailing. Before the playoffs I’d have said take Carson out, don’t think you can do that after how he played .Any update on Dubois? If he’s healthy I’d be curious what they do in terms of the lineup.
