UNB Reds Thread (Part5)

3 home games remaining . Are we not having a Mark Jeffrey game this year ? Soldier Appreciation and Pink In The Rink this weekend …
Obviously the game isn’t what it once was when the battle of the hill was competitive and it felt like a playoff game but would hate to see that tradition fade away…

Curious….has there ever been any talk about the future of the AUC or a potential replacement down the road? The rink is almost 50 years old now, after all.

IMO, unless the university gets a massive donation or organizes a fundraising initiative, I can’t imaging anything happening anytime soon.

I doubt it , it’s already 500x nicer than 95% of CIS rinks , I kinda see it going the way of Varsity Arena in Toronto (which might be the coolest rink in Canada).
I kinda suspect 80 years from now UNB is playing hockey at the Aitken Centre .

The one I mentioned is the only one I have heard but I would guess Reynolds , Huckins , Plandowski , Elliott are the most likely guys .
Would have to assume the majority will come from their current rookie group.

I wonder about St. FX too…they are already losing Johnston (who finally played a game for them on Saturday), but I would think Motew, Burroughs, Maillet, and Christopolous would all be drawing interest.

I realize it is highly likely but it is just speculation at this point. Let’s just enjoy the rest of the season.
We can enjoy the rest of the season while discussing the future … As a UNB fan am I discouraged , you bet… but I’m also curious to see how this all plays out , CIS hockey will land on its feet , still the same amount of collegiate hockey spots in North America as their was 8 months ago, the deck is just getting shuffled .

I’m still of the belief the impact beyond the elite of the elite will be pretty minor . Look at how many guys St.Fx had that played Jr.A as 20 year olds… I kind of see that being what UNB looks like in a few years , if the best team was built like X it’s still great hockey and UNB will get the best of the rest most likely .

After the Udem referee incident Ken Dryden said that CIS hockey needed more local players and for the players to better represent the student body and that is likely going to happen from all this .

As I said on the other post , we have school teachers playing senior hockey who are on some country’s national teams , the depth of hockey talent in Canada is actually insane when you take a step back.

I guess the hope might be that some of those guys that gave pro a shot this season will decide to pursue their education. That would help mitigate some of the talent loss around the league.
The one name I heard linked to UNB is a local guy who split time between tier-2 and major junior and is playing low level pro in Europe , take that for what it’s worth .

Some of you probably saw the post earlier , I deleted it because it was from a source with nothing to do with hockey and I don’t want to be that asshole posting personal conversations online haha.

I don’t get too upset when I see the top overagers committing to NCAA teams…they weren’t going U Sports anyway. But it seems like there have been a lot of those 30-50 point guys committing too…maybe more than I originally expected…those are the discouraging ones as they are the guys who would have been prime U Sports targets.

I see that but a lot more of those guys exist than the upper tier . Unless American teams go hard on Canadians I suspect the less desirable guys of that group will still be in play.

Not going to happen. UNB has really tight budget issues now, and it is a struggle to try to find the money to replace the audio system and upgrade the screens.

The university has been doing continuous maintenance on the AUC, includng replacing the whole ice pad right down to the dirt, cooling system and boards several years ago.

The private boxes they added several yeas ago were also supposed to be revenue positive.

My wish is that they add two rows of seats connected to and accessible from the Colter Room, much like the setup at the Dauphinee Centre at SMU, or the Mattamy rink (Maple Leaf Gardens) at TMU. Could then charge premium for Colter Room access, and you could then actually get out from behind the glass and see and hear the game.

I figured given the recent upgrades that a replacement wasn’t even on the radar.

I do like the idea of opening up the Colter Room by removing the glass. I don’t even think you would need to put in arena-style seats necessarily…just build a pub-height counter the whole way across with stools. If you provide a personal bartender/private bathrooms/maybe some kind of preferred access to the concessions that could be brought to your seat…you could absolutely charge a premium per ticket (or even for a UCup package), or rent it out to groups.
