Post-Game Talk: Ugly way to go into a break

What part of making a damn save during a defensive breakdown is so hard for a starting goalie. Oilers have among the lowest high danger chances against of any team

Skinner would have been waived on any other team, his basic stats would be much more ugly than they already are here

Skinner's numbers:

Against Current Top 10 Teams: 3-9-2, 0.863 Sv%, 3.36 GAA
Against Current Playoff Teams: 8-11-3, 0.882 Sv%, 3.00 GAA
(Pickard took the loss against the Avs, but I still tacked the loss to Skinner)

Rankings amongst 48 goalies with 20 GP

GSAx - 35th, GSAx/60 - 35th.

Sv% - 29th, Sv%x - 35th

LDSA Sv% - 35th, LDSA Sv%x - 35th

MDSA Sv% - 36th, MDSA Sv%x - 36th

HDSA Sv% - 17th, HDSA Sv%x - 14th

I don't know how anyone can look at this and still defend Skinner.

They can if they're related to him! (Literally the only thing that makes sense). CantHaveSkinner be the starter going into this year's playoffs

This.
Yet those very same posters that defend his sorry ass try to find some reason to pin it on McDrai when they aren't scoring EVERY game

This game may have been a watershed moment wrt to Skinner. I have serious concerns about how they can deal with this but the reality is they probably need to find a way and I suspect that this is becoming more clear each game for the Oiler brass.

The Oilers brass will die on the hill.."He got us to within one goal of the Stanley cup last year."

And why are we letting defense off the hook and expecting any goaltender to make consistent saves in close on undefended players.

High Danger isn't the problem:

It's uncontested chances, where the defense lets someone in uncovered and often this is in the crease. The NBA tracks uncontested shots, why doesn't the NHL?

I want a good goalie and good team defense, not "Fuhr at the back" and nice fancystats.

All of Skinner's bad games lately have had the exact same theme. Always a higher profile game or against a good team then always implodes early, usually on the PK. There is never anything particularly extraordinary about these chances either. Relatively routine, and just vomits on himself.

To me this is a mental issue which is most concerning. The Oilers have been a mess with the puck for a few weeks, and he's been very good at times against teams that suck or nobody cares about. If anything, the chances in those games have been more difficult than the ones against the good teams, but he saves those. He can't mentally play good teams.

All of these games have followed this trend where he can't save a beach ball early on the PK:

- Avalanche comeback game there
- Game in Vancouver where he got ripped up on the PK
- Game here against the Leafs - ripped early and on the PK
- Last game - ripped early and on the PK

Basically if there are eyes on the game you can set a clock to being down 2-0 or 3-0 in the first 10 minutes. All while he's been borderline spectacular at times against the Buffalo Sabres of the world.

Two themes on the types of goals that are going in too - anything along the ice from distance, bad rebounds net front.

The team is 1st in HDCA with 9.33/60 and 3rd in HDGA with 1.12/60. It's the amount of Low-Medium Danger Shots he lets in that tank his numbers.

Nobody is really letting the defense off the hook though. Have you seen the amount of Bouchard Nurse slander the past couple of years?

That's all his apologists need, Who cares about his record against the top teams when he can still beat the weak ones?

I think it's a window into the problem that shows it's more mental than technical IMO.

It isn't like those games against bad teams have been salted away with easy 20 save shutouts where they never really challenged. If anything the Oilers up front have been worse against the bad teams, but he stands on his head there.
