Metrics look real good but who of you isnt concerned we won’t see similar breakdowns in coverage in the postseason when everything is tighter, forechecking more ferocious and less scoring at the other end.
Every team breaks down, but we could have been better.

Skinner still sucks. Most other goalies don't let in those 2 muffins after the breakdown.

I don’t know why but this loss and the earlier FLA loss are the two that bug me the most.

I’ve been in Skinners court so far but damn those first two were muffins.

So yeah, not good but also nobody picking up the trailer on Makar’s goal and the D both focusing on the shooter and letting Lekkonen in on the doorstep wide open.

So maybe we do have a goalie problem but we also have a lax at the back problem as well.

What part of that not picking up trailers and letting shooters have open looks in the crease untouched?

Skinner was bad, but own zone without the puck play is also not good.

What part of making a damn save during a defensive breakdown is so hard for a starting goalie. Oilers have among the lowest high danger chances against of any team

Skinner would have been waived on any other team, his basic stats would be much more ugly than they already are here

McDavid hasnt added anything to his game in years, besides the meme shot off the goalies back. In fact, he has regressed since his 60 goal campaign. Crosby didn't start as a 2way stud. Neither did Draisaitl or Matthews. Unacceptable effort on that side of the puck by the "captain". And I use quotations because it's obviously Drais team. Sorry but screaming "dig in" isn't a leader.

I'm very worried we have seen the best of his career and it's downhill from here.
Hope McDavid prints this out and looks at it every day until he is fired the F up and will be a GOD again. f*** this Bedard horseshit thats a load of poppycock for reals

There is no example of a team willing to spend $15m in actual cash to 'save' the same amount. Anaheim is happy keeping Gibson as a healthy tandem goalie. That contract isn't preventing them from doing anything. Look at their situation realistically. Any kind of retention on his contract would take premium assets to convince them to eat salary. And again, you're talking about a goalie with a larger sample of average to poor results dating back many seasons.

He's a trade target marred with unrealistic cost expectations and even more unrealistic performance expectations.

I don't necessarily disagree that the Oilers could use a veteran fallback option for this playoff run. But we're a month away from the trade deadline. You're not going to see the team add a new starting goalie.

A) We don't have a starting goalie period. .900 this year and .905 last year, .901 in the playoffs, .883 in the playoffs the year prior ... there's a word for that ... it's called a BACK UP GOALIE. This organization just needs to be forced to accept the truth.

We are running two back up goalies and pretending one is a starter because he's from Edmonton and has a mustache. Top 10 teams are no longer going along with the charade and are studying up on him and lighting him up like a Christmas tree now. Good luck with that. You better hope you don't have to play against any of the league's other elite forwards like MacK or Eichel because they are going to take this guy behind the woodshed in a 7 game series.

B) Why should Anaheim spend $11-12 million dollars on goaltending when they can shave $3.2 per season million off that cost and could get a nice draft pick back?

And this is NOT Skinners fault either. This is a management fault in the end. I feel bad ripping the guy, but god he sucks. This is not his fault. Idiots up above.

on that short handed goal..
bouchard lackadaisical pass gives the puck to the opponent, ....but the back check to redeem himself was non existent,,,,,his attitude is like "oh well"

.

Everyone on the planet knew he was going to pass it back to McDavid..

A. Our starting goalie is 26 years old. Started 82 games last season, including the playoffs. And was a win away from the Stanley Cup. As of today John Gibson has two more starts than Calvin Pickard.

B. Because they're happy with the tandem they've got and they realize that they're going to need to spend more money to replace him, if he's traded.

It's a waste of time to argue the 50% retention. It never happens for long term contracts because of the actual salary commitments. Anaheim isn't paying $15m for a 'juicy draft pick', which projects to be equal to a 2nd round pick.

Skinner's not a starter. He's a back up the Oilers want to pretend is a starter that got carried to the playoffs and was very fortunate he didn't have to face a MacKinnon or Eichel tier forward until the Finals where he lost.

Winning a Cup is exceptionally difficult with a .900 goalie basically.

There ain’t no way Stuart Skinner is playing like an actual starter. He f***ing sucks. Give me Vejmelka or Gibson otherwise GG Stanley cup.

Starting the games does not mean Stu has the ability to be a reliable starter.

No, there are goalies with better numbers who make less. But even if that were true, so what? We can’t win a Cup with him. Pay up or continue to lose.

This is about the only thing I agree with, but even then with the cap going up retention like this is going to become more common to facilitate moves I expect.

Skinner is basically showing himself for what he is ... about a .900 goalie, maybe .905 with many things going his way, this is mediocrity and back up level performance. .901 in the playoffs. The numbers are just difficult to ignore, the Oilers need to be embarrassed and shamed into doing something, Skinner's numbers against top 10 teams is finally creating a stink even they cannot ignore. The media is even addressing it, Knoblaugh finally lost his patience with him last night too (long time coming).

He's fine as a back up but that's all he is, he gets eaten alive by the true top end players of the league (MacK, Marner, Nylander, Makar made him look like dog shit).

He's been scouted more too, after making a Cup Final you no longer have the benefit of being a secret or surprise, teams very clearly are targeting our PP, our goaltending, and McDavid wanting to force passes to Hyman for 50 goals.

By definition Stuart Skinner is an NHL starting goalie. Also the least challenged by a backup in the McDavid era.

And I don't disagree that it's difficult to win with a goalie putting up that save percentage. But there's also no guarantee that a goalie putting up a 0.915 in Anaheim, comes here and reverts to the ~0.900 goalie he was in four of the past five seasons.

This isn't just a Skinner problem. It's been a Pickard problem. A Campbell problem. A Smith problem. A Koskinen problem. A Talbot problem. All of those guys fell to the same level of performance and were marred by soft, deflating goals. Where's your guarantee that the next goalie is the one that breaks the trend?

.900 is an Oilers problem.

Pretty sure our tandem has the worst numbers of any playoff team. It's by far the biggest weakness on the team.

Smith was alright he was just freaking 39 years old, if he was 32 years old instead, that would have been fine but at 39/40 years old you're going to gas out in a playoff run. Koskinen and Skinner just aren't that good, they're good back ups. Talbot has been good for most of his career, half our D-corps going down to injury or weird circumstances on a young, immature team did him in.

He’s f***ing awful. Imagine having a mindset of prioritizing an asset like Trent Frederic over an actual starting goalie. This team NEEDS a better goalie and deserves one after the way they’ve been playing this year. Get Skinner the f*** into a backup position where he belongs

You can’t see how anyone would think Gibson would be a real improvement?

He has the 5th best GSAA in the league while playing for a garbage team. It’s a near certainty he’d be a real improvement over our sieve who has no business being a starter on an elite team.
Major improvement. Lol Skinner would be in Latvia by now if he played on the ducks.

If Bowman does not get a true starter at the deadline then he truly is a massive bonehead. Everyone and their mother's can see Stu is not a starter. I've been saying it since he was thrown into the net as a starter because of Campbell and I haven't backed down.

Well whoever wins the Pacific is going to draw a serious heavy weight matchup from the Central first round. The Avs, Wild or Stars. Pacific's second place will draw the Kings, Flames or Canucks. Two teams we have owned and the Canucks who seem to be on fire not in a good way. So there is that. I really dont think winning as much as possible the rest of the way to secure the division is a need at this point.

Getting a slightly easier first round isn’t worth giving up home ice possibly for the rest of the playoffs.

He’s a “franchise starter” the same way Kailer Yamamoto is a “top six forward” (or at least the Oilers tried to make believe for like 3 years).

I agree with you. But if what Bob said is true from what I posted above, hopefully that has finally woken up management to realize they cannot run this current tandem into the playoffs again. Give this team even average goaltending consistently and it’s a cup threat. No excuses for the team to be good in all areas (even fricken defensively) and to be let down by goaltending majorly. Gibson or Vejmelka, let’s ride.
Hard to know if Bob is really all that connected these days.
From now until March 7th is going to be very interesting.

I would argue that your misusing the word "slightly". I think the Avs, Stars and Wild are on a completely different tier than the Flames, Kings and Nucks
