Should hold on to his stick a little better. That would have been a VERY soft call, no great injustice here.

Agreed. Looks bad after goal gets scored right away, but had they whistled a penalty for that, it would also have looked pretty stupid. It was decent sticklift, from down to up not to hands or anything dirty.

Yes, but usually you lift a stick from a player who has a puck.

Laine is a beast. Has looked better than Pulju in this tournament imho.

The draft day they are eligible is going to be good day for Finnish hockey program..

Laine really looks stronger in this game. Like a star.

Yeah, that's what Button said on TSN as well. Swiss player didn't have the puck, so it should've been a penalty.

Umm, it's not true. You are allowed to sticklift players that don't have puck. That happens and should happen all the time specially when you are defensive team in front of your own net.

But if you lift the stick of a player who wants to go for the puck it fits the definition of intereference.

Is ly-nay how you pronounce his name??

Lie (like the word is pronounced) na (very short a).

Lie-na

Not gonna call myself a ref here. But sticklifts before player receiving a pass ect.. happen all the time and are generally legal.

When I think about it more, there is no way you can whistle inteference for a sticklift to an puckless opponent.

That makes sense, bacause you want the puck. But there is absolutely no rule against lifting the stick of a player who doesn't have the puck. Defensemen often do this in front of the net to prevent deflections.

Damn, i just love this Laine guy. He is so cool. I just don´t know how his skills convert to NHL level later?

I mean if he ever gets there ofc ;)

Not a ref, but the Stick lift thing is more complicated that I thought, I thought it was a missed penalty too - but the argument has its merits. A defenceman will lift a forwards stick to prevent them reachng for the puck all the time, basically every shift
If that's ok - why can't a forward do the same to prevent the defenceman from cutting the pass?

So to my understanging it therefore must be legal - and we go back to the question of was it an innocent lift and the defender tossed the stick away for theatrical purposes or was it more?

And if they don't, they aren't very good defenseman. "Play the stick away" is what they should do and what every one should know.

That kind of screens are made all the time to make the passes available. It's not a penalty. But if you make a hit, grab, or hook, or inteference him playing the body by moving with other than your natural skating line or standing still its not of course legal.

Ah okay, because the canadian commentator enunciates the "na" or neh" very strongly, which I found a bit odd considering the spelling of laine's name. makes sense now.

Yeah, that´s my only concern actually... I have a feeling he will mature and behave more professional in the future

Well it depends. As an offensive threat and highlight moves yes. As a complete player not even close. Laine's defending is standing or going back to bench.
