I'm not sure you want to use that clip if you are trying to say how Girard can defend the big boys. I like Girard but Rads made Girard his b*tch in that clip.

The problem is you seem to associate good defence exludsively with those things. What about puck movement? Stick work? Positioning? Zone exits? Skating ability? etc. Those factors play just as important a role in good defence. So yes, I'd much rather have Makar out there than Ian Cole.

And I've shown you examples of all the top teams in the league. How they all have size and toughness on D over small, skilled guys.

I've showed you the past Stanley Cup champions that show the same.

And last I checked big, physical guys can do all the things you listed. And be able to light a guy up and win 1 on 1 battles.

If you think we will change the way hockey has been played for the last 100 years with 3 undersized guys who are not strong defensively then great. I just dont think its feasible.

And you are probably the only person in the hockey world that would put Cale Makar out in a big defensive situation over Ian Cole. If you think you know more than any coach that has ever coached then all the power to you.

Just can’t see Barrie agreeing to the deal. Prefer that he’s moved at the draft so the AVs can draft a replacement.

You're suggesting we trade Barrie for two bigger guys that are worth the same in $. I'm just pointing out that it would mean you would trade Boychuk and J.Staal for Mcdavid based on your opinion of tall players

Man... I'm so on the fence about the Barrie contract. I don't think he will be easily replaced if he eventually walks in free agency, or is traded for a top-six forward. On the other hand, I really don't want to give him, 8-8.5 million when he can sometimes be a liability in his own zone. I do think the Avs are starting to head into their window of contention and it's time to start getting a little more aggressive, and maybe that starts with signing one of their own.

People seem to think that Barrie needs to be "replaced" immediately, as if the team will score 50 fewer goals every year if you subtract him from the lineup. I think that's shortsighted, a lot of his points come on the first PP unit by just giving the puck to MacK and letting him do something magical with it. You could put Cole on the first PP and he would get inflated numbers as long as he could make a simple pass. And Barrie for a forward who could give us a second line behind 9296 would easily offset the offense at ES by balancing out our forward corps. It just makes sense, especially considering that we have plenty of puck movers on the team now.

Our top 4 without him would be:

Girard - Makar
Zadorov - EJ

That's not bad, especially considering that we have some prospects like Graves and Meloche pushing for NHL time soon too. It wouldn't be some massive blow to our top 6 D like people are suggesting. It's an easily survivable hit, and if it comes with the benefit of a top six player who can help our forward depth, it's a no brainer to trade him.

And that's not even mentioning the inconvenient fact that he has proven difficult to negotiate with in the past, and nobody has given a compelling reason why it would be any easier this time around. All in all, it's time to move on.
