This can’t be serious. Homeboy is on pace for 12 points this season, and has the worst Wins Above Replacement, and Goals Above Replacement in the league. This is Eriksson contract 2.0.

How many canucks are in the bottom of that list?

Among defense men, Myers is top 30 in Corsi, top 20 in scoring chances generated, and top 10 in high danger chances generated per Natural statrick. .

I think the truth is somewhere between these two.

He's a serviceable top 4 RHD that got overpaid in FA. Wasn't the first, won't be the last. I think he's been decent, but has more to give in the O-zone; certainly not a top pairing D, but also not a Louie either.

My concern is for year 3-6 of this deal. I can't see it aging well.

Exactly. He’s decent but currently has net negative value around the league because of the 6M cap hit attached to him which will only get worse as he ages and will be near impossible to move in a couple years. Hopefully for the Canucks he maintains his level of play for the majority of his 5 year contract.

I would says its about 50/50 if he is even in the league playing regularly by the end of his contract

Myers has been somewhat better than I expected, but your point hits the nail exactly on the head. He's already a negative net-value player. And we're in year one of another "Benning Special" contract. It's already near-unmoveable and will get worse as he ages. There's no reason to think it won't be a disastrous contract.

I'll take "he's out of the NHL", but honestly a pretty fair line.

Both of your posts are just stunning indictments of Benning.

Surprisingly Edler is down there too. Gardiner and Gostisbehere are now below Myers in WAR. Edler and Myers are the only Canucks in the bottom 50 in the league in terms of WAR and GAR, and I suspect Edler has been dragged down by being paired with Myers.

On the flip side, Pettersson, Hughes, and Boeser rank top 50. Pettersson and Hughes ranking in at 5th and 6th in the league respectively.

I think the truth is somewhere between these two.

Myers is not a serviceable top 4 defenseman. He's a bottom pair defenseman who got grossly overpaid in free agency. He has not been decent. He's been awful this year. He's been a lot worse this year than I even expected.

This is a bit of an aside, but Gardiner has a history of strong performance in terms of possession, so I'm curious to know if this is reflected in his historical WAR vs. Myers too. Any chance that a small sample size could be playing into this? I'm not sure how these things play into WAR - I don't even know what data it relies on or how it weights them...

Myers performance so far is living proof of why you have to out-wait the first 15-games of the season to make an assessment....and so far his November and December, has been underwhelming.

He wasn't a top-four guy in Winnipeg and won't be in VanCity either, at least when the team is actually good and a perennial playoff contender, whenever that might occur. But of course the problem is that his pay-scale, dictates that he has to be a top-four guy in order for the numbers to work.

Just another in Jimbo's mind-numbing procession of shaky UFA signings. I mean, how is it possible that not one of them ever works out? But I guess until the owner gets fed up, nothing will change.

And to think I took crap from people for saying he's a bottom pair defenseman on the same level as Gudbranson.
That’s still an awful take. Even with Myers playing like crap now, he’s still way better than Gudbranson. It’s a ridiculously low bar, of course, but not a good comparison at all.

Except so far, I don't see it. You can say it's ridiculous all you want because the Canucks just gave $6M long-term to Myers and you don't want it to be true because we all know how awful Gudbranson has been, but Myers has been equally as bad.

Gudbranson
GF%: 54
xGF%: 48
CF%: 49
GAR: 3.3
WAR: 0.6
Offensive zone starts: 32%
Defensive zone starts: 37%

Myers:
GF%: 44
xGF%: 49
CF%: 52
GAR: -5.6
WAR: -1.0
Offensive zone starts: 36%
Defensive zone starts: 28%

So no, it's not an awful take. I know the sample size is relatively low as we're looking at this season, but Myers has been awful.

Our experience with this guy in the Peg, went something like this:

10 game stretch: "why do people bad mouth this guy.....does not look bad at all."
Next 15: "Uh, OK."

Playoffs: "Oh he's been good"

?

Now that’s just cherry-picking. We have a larger sample size for Gudbranson, so why not use it? How do those same stats from when he was on the Canucks compare to Myers’ on the Canucks? (hint: not good. He was arguably the worst defenceman in the entire league in his stint here)

Ya. Not sure why we're not allowed to make an appreciation thread where the mods move off topic discussions elsewhere.

As a former mod.
Why clutter up the board with two Myers threads.

Maybe we should segment every player discussion, one for only positive comments and one for critique.

Got news for you, mods aren't against you. The thread is clearly tagged as "Player discussion", appropriately so.
