It takes less than 1 minute to find out that buying out Myers literally has ZERO benefit to do this off season...5m SB paid on July 1, he would have over a 5m dead cap hit if bought out...

Make this thread again in a year/
Been reported that the signing bonus is owed on Sept 15 and the Coyotes would very much be interested in Myers. They need RHDs, his salary is = to bottom pairs, and cap hit is irrelevant to AZ.

They're gonna turn down savings of 5 million over a 3rd or 2nd round pick? When they can flip him at the deadline @ 50% for at least a third? You realize he would cost them less money than they're paying Valimaaki who they did claim for free and who was very much a question mark as an NHLer going into this season

Did they? He's not a world beater but he should be decently valuable to a contender just as an established NHL regular with that sub 1mm contract

Cap hits matter. Valimaki is a young player with talent who was worth taking a chance on. Myers is not. He's a dump.

No one is taking a $6m cap hit off waivers.

The Arizona Coyotes currently have 6 Ds on their roster (and would like to carry 8 Ds) and Mackey will be a UFA.
Brown and waiver-exempt Soderstrom are their only 2 RHDs. NHL ready LHD Kolyachonok will also be waiver-exempt next year. Yes, the Coyotes would be interested if Meyers is a pure dump. They need to fill out their roster.

Can waive him after the bonus is paid instead. I'm sure a team would claim him then. I still think he ends up in AZ.
No one is taking that contract for free. It will cost at least a 2nd round pick to dump that contract.

Yes, cap hits matter. Especially for teams trying to hit the cap floor. While paying the least possible salary possible. For them the bigger the cap hit to salary discrepancy, the better. See Shea Weber and Jakub Voracek cap hits finding their ways to the Coyotes without any incentive to take them on going the other way.

If Myers was put on waivers the coyotes biggest regret would be that his cap hit is 6 million and not 10. Especially since even as crapped on as he is he is much better than a 1 million dollar on ice player and they have fewer established NHL defensemen than any team in the league

Plus they would easily be able to get back an asset at the trade deadline by retaining 50%.

There are a few teams that will easily take a 6 mil cap hit that only costs 1 mil in actual money.

Arizona has already made moves that will allow them to easily hit the cap floor in 2023-24. They don’t need more cap dumps, though I’m sure they’ll take on bad contracts for the right compensation.

The best targets right now for taking on summer cap dumps like Myers are Chicago and Anaheim. They’re both well behind Arizona in hitting the cap floor.

Their roster for next season is at 57 million, and other than Macelli no one should be getting anything significant, and even Macelli they can bridge pretty cheaply if they want. Getting Myers lets them do stuff like move Schmaltz though and save money that way. I don't see anyone other than Keller or Crouse making big money on that roster that they wouldn't ditch in a second if they got a fair return. And Myers has value among GMs as a rental if he's dealt retained at the deadline.

If they don't need Myers cap hit, they still get a 2-3 million dollar player for 1 million dollars and flexibility for later. It's not like they'd be within striking distance of the cap with him there.

I do agree that him going to the Ducks is more likely, they might even give something up for him since they're completely barren on the right minus Drysdale. Chicago has Jones, Murphy and Zaitsev on the right already and as a big market team they don't care about pinching pennies, hence getting Zaitsev now despite his upcoming bonus

They take the contract after the bonus is paid and flip him at half retained at the deadline. Someone always looking for a RHD at deadline and don't kid yourselves as a 3rd pairing guy he'd be great.

AT likes to go with 11Fs 7Ds to give forwards more ice time, while not having to have blueliners to eat up minutes. They currently only have 6 Ds and 1 is a UFA.

Cap hit doesn't matter for teams like Anaheim and Arizona. They have plenty of cap space so why not use it to their advantage?? You use the cap space either to make the team better if you are a playoff team or weaponized it to get assets OR use it to get more share of the revenue sharing pot money by trading for players with high cap hit but lower actual dollar salary. What's the use of cap space if you don't use it at all?

If Myers is waived after his $5m signing bonus is paid and only has $1m in salary remaining for 2023-24 it’s a lock some team will claim him off waivers.

Unlikely a significant playoff contending team though, as they’re usually tighter on cap room.

So Waivers cancels out a M-NTC?

On the surface you are correct, However Vancouver does things.

Things they shouldn't do, like trading a top 10 pick to take on OEL, and Garland's contract.

Or trading a 1st when they are rebuilding

Or signing JT Miller to 8X7

or Loui Eriksson to 6X6.

Vancouver does things
We Vancouver fans are quite willing to admit-nay, shout to the heavens-that the Canucks have done stupid things. In the case of recently departed management, they did really, really stupid things. In the case of new management, they've confounded quite a few fans and media members by not committing to a rebuild but in the context of a goal to compete as soon as next year their moves are generally understandable.

Probably nobody who has been an NHL general manager during the cap era has done anything as stupid as buying out Myers this summer would be.

As for what Myers would be worth signing for in free agency were the impossible to happen, I'd say about $2.5-$3 million, but would expect that in the insanity of Free Agent Frenzy he'd get more, possibly quite a bit more.

i think for sure he gets taken if waived after his bonus is paid. despite his well documented flaws, he's a big durable physical mobile veteran rhd who can eat minutes. he's also a tdl flip candidate in a key position as an expiring ufa with retention. those features and a $1m cash salary are very attractive to bad teams and teams with internal budgets.

so if you time it towards the end of camp there will be many teams managing unexpected injuries and sweating their rhd depth generally who will take a hard look. some good teams will also have ltir room. he will get taken.

but trading him for assets without retention is much harder if he is aggressive with his no trade list to block the bottom feeders who would possibly pay assets for his minutes and tdl flip value. the remaining market of not as horrible teams with cap room looking for depth will be small and they will be looking to either use it on a better player or weaponize it. you need a couple of teams who find themselves looking for a stop gap rhd solution to create a bidding war or he will not return much.

2 of those which was under current regime is not comparable to the 2 by Benning. If you are comparing OEL contract to Miller then you probably don't watch the Canucks much. Miller is part of the core so his signing is well justified for a 100 point forward. I take him over John Tavares who gets paid 11 million. Heck I even take him over Nylander too. The only 2 players on the Leafs that might be better than Miller are Matthews and Marner. Miller would be the 3rd best forward on the Leafs
I hate the leafs as much as the next person but this whole statement is absolutely f***ing ridiculous. Nylander, maybe, but to say maybe to Marner or especially Matthews is bias and nothing but, just stop.

Myers' agent knows the game. You can be sure all the cap dump destinations (ARI, CHI, ANA, SJ) will be on his NTC.

My read of the organization's view of Myers is that they think he is a legit player (they're wrong, but oh well). If they can't trade him, they won't waive him.

The only way they get off Myers in the summer is via a retained salary trade (likely 50%) to a team that isn't in the basement, but has a real need at RD that they believe Myers can fill. If you squint, I could see Dallas maybe being in this bucket, as Lundvist/Miller/Hakanpaa isn't that inspiring on the right side. Perhaps Minnesota finds him as a B-list Dumba replacement. Detroit probably will look for another veteran defenseman.

He is team tank, the chaos giraffe is a key contributor to improving your draft position. Not to mention he will have value at the TDL as a large, experienced, RHD.

Arizona traded a valuable player in Mayo for Shea Weber's contract, they would be all over Myers after his signing bonus is paid don't kid yourself. That's savings of 5 million dollars for a team struggling to hit the floor and losing virtually every real dollar they pay in player salary

His cap hit also opens the door for player movement. Arizona is a deadline seller and you can’t move players out the door if it makes you fall below the floor. I could see them easily claiming a guy with $1m in salary with a $6m cap hit.

As much as Myers cap hit is detrimental to some teams it’s also beneficial to others. This is simple yet lost on some posters.

The Coyotes have Voracek's, Weber's, and Little's contracts which gives them almost $21.4M flexibility and at the trade deadline they will have accumulated enough floor space where it would be impossible to get under the floor...

All GMS do GM things. Don't forget trading a first for an injured Foligno. Benning and Dubas outsuck each other easily.
