Prospect Info: Tyler Kleven (D) at 44th Overall (Sens traded up)

I think Yak ends up in Belleville to learn the pro game next season & hopefully, he is NHL ready to replace Jensen when his contract ends after next season.

He will be in Belleville unless he blows the doors off in a short sample TC like he did last year. He clearly needs time there and I think this brass will want him there to get seasoned for the pro game and to continue to develop. Jensen is really good .. I would not expect Yak to replace Jensen so early in his career; thins is not Jake Sanderson coming in.

Do you think that Jensen gets re-signed then since they really have no one else who can move into that 2nd RD spot? Given Mantinpalo has been good defensively ,but brings no offence it's quite possible that Yak could be Kleven's partner next yr too. Although I do agree he could use some seasoning in Belleville & maybe it's just for half a yr.

Yes I think they will want to extend him.. signed is another thing depending on term , $ etc

1/2 year is a wish ... Call him up when he is ready and the Sens can slot him properly with the right partner for him to succeed

Really, at 34 yrs old you think they will extend Jensen with Yak sitting there? You may be right, but I think he starts with Kleven maybe halfway through the yr, two big guys who can move the puck & Yak can add some offence to the 3rd pair. And then moves up after Jensen is gone. Should be interesting to see how this plays out, but I'm optimistic with Yak, he doesn't have to be great, he just has to add a little more to this D & be good defensively

Saved a goal by swatting the puck out of mid air behind Ullmark.

Almost sniped a backhand short side cheese.. that play took poise, which he has demonstrated a considerable amount of in the past two games.

And of course, it led to the OT winner from Sandy.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump up with Sandy more often at even strength. He’s feeling it, while Zub has been inconsistent.

Kleven continues to improve & has been good in this series, we need a couple more big tough defencemen who hit to hurt. Hopefully Yak will be that guy, Matinpalo plays alright defensively but there isn't much there to work with or improve. I expect Yak to take his job by Xmas, or sooner & he makes a very good tandem with Kleven.

He’s going to end up as a top 4 defensive anchor on a top 2 pairing like a Beauchemin / Tanev / Seabrooke. He was one of our best players last night, what an OT shift for that goal. Stud. His dad seems awesome too so you know he’s the real deal.

Guys who step up in the playoffs are the keepers. Kleven to me is now a key part of this core in the sense he’s shown he can be a key contributor in key situations and huge moments and his roll has grown. He wants to drive the bus and big men who play D with a take charge attitude become so key in playoffs they are almost your most important players.

Also, the reverse hit

He has been a player who would win the "improved the most during the season" award. Steadily, getting better, more confident, bigger hits etc. So excited that we have a kid like this.
A big summer will help as well. He has to work on his 1st 3 step acceleration. His reads and his poise have really come along nicely.

Yeah its his poise and panic threshold that i find impressive. I remember last year commenting once when he rushed the puck up the ice that he must think he is Jake Sanderson lol. But i think he has learned a few things from Jake. For a defensive dman he is pretty good with the puck. Hope that develops more too

If you told me before this season that this guy could legitimately become a top 4 D I’d have laughed in your face.

Was beyond impressed with him last night.

Been underrated here for a while.

He can take chabots spot when Chabby is traded.
Get him a quality partner ala jensen.

If Chabot is dealt, we need another top 4 D.

Jensen is old and not a true top pairing D. Zub is a marginal 2nd pairing D who gets injured a lot, not a long-term solution IMO. Yakemchuk may not be a top 4 DMan for 5 years, and that isn't even close to a worst-case scenario. Stanley, Matinpalo, Eliasson, etc. are all extreme longshots to be in the NHL 5 years from now. And Kleven, I love him, but the odds of him ever having a season like Chabot just did are extremely low.

Sanderson, Kleven, Chabot, Yakemchuk - those are the 5 D in our organization you can safely predict will be NHLers in 5 years. No one else. Chabot has a big contract and is somewhat redundant on our team, but we wouldnt have made the playoffs without him.

It would be great if Kleven could play RD but that is usually a very difficult, sometimes impossible transition to make.

I agree. Chabot should only be dealt for a RD imo. Don’t know if there is a feasible trade to make there but that’s the only way I’d really consider it, otherwise I don’t think we can afford to weaken our left side given the issues with our right side already.

We may soon be back at a place where our top 3 D are LHD, but at least Kleven brings a different element and can be signed to an inexpensive contract, unlike Chychrun. Removing Chabot without adding a top 3 RHD OR, say, a 4 RHD and 5 LHD, our D will take a massive step back.

That’s what I’m saying. Get top 4 d to play with and compliment Kleven. An upgrade on what we have.

So take
Chabot-Jensen and then make a better pair than that out of

Kleven-????
