His skill set is something the team would need, but I'm with the majority thinking trading up was a bold and unnecessary move for a player of this skill set. Is it fair to say this guy is 4 years away from being NHL ready?

4 years to full time is about right. 2 years At UND and a year in AHL/NHL. By year 4 he should be in the opening day lineup

I heard that he was possibly a target for Montreal at #47 or #48

Usually, when you see a team trading up to get a player it's because they think there's a very good chance a team drafting before you is going to pick him . A lot of people work at NHL drafts, there's a lot of chat going around, people hear rumours and speculate. It's like a game of chess, predicting what the others are going to do.

I like this pick, has a chance to really pay off. This guy is raw.

According to Pierre's interview with Living Legend Gord Wilson, the scouting team was VERY high on this guy and didn't want to pass him by so traded up to get him. Even though I always drafted Kleven with the 3rd or 4th at draftsim, I think this might be an underrated pick. Has the tools to develop into a top-4 defenceman.

Serious question. Who is the coach at North Dakota? He is guaranteed to get an interview if Smith gets canned or at least a surefire candidate for an assistant job down the road.

Brad Berry. I remember watching him play D for the Winnipeg Jets many years ago.

Sounds like a Dion Phaneuf type in his battle level. Won’t be convinced until I see him hack a guys glove off.

I wasn't high on this pick but TSN Bob had him 36th. He's big and strong and will run someone threw the glass. I don't mind it.

There was some scout quoted as saying something along the lines of "you stick this big raw kid in a place that develops players the way they (North Dakota) do for a few years and you're bound to get a player out of it" and to me it sounded like the most Senators thing of all time

It took me a day to wrap my head around it, but I don't mind it. Here's this big kid who is a good skater, who has a bomb of a shot, and can run you through the boards. If they can teach him to make an adequate first pass he might just become a better player then people are anticipating. Maybe he's one of the dumbest players to ever lace up skates and the IQ ends up holding him back, but it's not like he's some lumbering oaf out there. The guy has some skills that the development team (should) be able to work with. This is a kid who may very well be "two years away from being two years away" but could be better than advertised once he's here. I've seen some (stylistic) comps to Methot and if he becomes half the player MM was he'll slot in very nicely behind Chabot/Sanderson eating PK minutes.

Think Kleven might be a bit underrated round here. Looking forward to his progress.
Guys that play that defensive role are hard tet a feel for when you don't watch full games and only catch highlights. Also playing that role can sometimes mean not getting a chance to show your offensive skillset.

I'm looking forward to seeing him and all the other guys in UND.

Imagine gord Wilson starts by saying something the sens did was f***ing stupid. I would spit out my food.

This may be true, but from watching him, I think you can draw a direct line from his lack of puck skill to his lack of production. Historically, defenders that produce like Tyler Kleven are not likely to be NHL regulars. Here is a chart looking at all drafted CHL defenders from the 1999 draft to 2008 draft.

As you can see, there is a big cluster at the bottom left of the graph. This cluster breaks at about the 0.55 PPG mark. The author of this graph suggests that a player that plays 40% of all available games is an NHL regular.

In the same window, these are the defenders that scored under 0.5 PPG but played over 40% of available games (at the time the data was put together).

Marc Methot average 2 goals and 14 points in his 5 seasons here in Ottawa. His best season here he didn’t score a goal in the regular season, was just a fire extinguisher every time he was on the ice. If Kleven can do something similar and just be a solid support partner it’ll be a great pick.

If Tyler Kleven can become a good player, it'll be a good pick. In other news, the sky is blue.

Curious to see what Zdeno Chara's graphs looked like at that age, though I don't know if the data exists. Sens were convinced enough to move up the draft to pick him (before Montreal supposedly did) upon considering the talent still available at the draft. I think they see him as a long term project who has at least a bottom 6 level floor (which is what some posters have concluded he will be at best, hence the draft price makes them unhappy with the pick). As a long-term project, they will show him enough patience to grow into more than that.

In terms of ceiling, a Methot type level as a shutdown defenceman is attainable through development.

Problem is that there are pure shutdown D drafted far too high every year because teams think they have the next Methot on their hands.

It's extremely rare for a player like Methot, who's OHL career high was 16P in 67GP (playing in that legendary 05 Knights offense no less) to develop the kind of puck moving skills necessary to play quality minutes at the highest level.

His skating played a huge role, and that's something that Kleven does very well, so hopefully he can develop similarly going forward.
