They are both top 6 defenseman for Chuck Fletcher's 27th place Philadelphia Flyers.

Justin Braun, 35 years old - signed to a 1 year, $1m deal on 7/13/2022

Rasmus Ristolainen, 28 years old - signed to a 5 year, $25,000,000 deal on 3/10/2022

The trade for Risto was UGLY, but then doubling down and re-signing him to that absurd contract shows that Fletcher can't admit when he makes a mistake, so he re-signs a bad player in hopes it makes the trade appear to be worth it.

The fancy stats people were really vindicated on Ristolainen only being "good" because he played a lot.
He had a brief run of ‘maybe he’ll be ok’ early last year, but that disappeared quickly.

There's clearly talent there to be a serviceable player, and he'll have serviceable runs, but there's obviously also holes that he can't overcome.

A Sabres fan once described him as being like Zoolander. If he knows where you're going and/or drives you where you were initially going, he's fine, but he can't turn.

The brain never processed the game at an NHL level. I feel bad for the guy.

Guessing age hasn't helped him, but Braun was a great depth add for the Rangers defense last year in the playoffs. He stabilized the third pair with Schneider. Nothing flashy and no real offense to speak of, but you didn't notice him, which is basically what you want on the third pair.

I'm actually very curious if Flyer fans believe Philly will eventually blow it up and rebuild/re-tool. Would they be able to do something like that while Holmgren and Clarke are still there?

It's already blown up, mostly by accident. It's more about digging out from under the rubble. And no, there's no faith that will be done correctly.

Ristolainen's decline was downright ridiculous. Yes, I know he has always been an analytical trainwreck and has always been a bad player, but "0 points in 25 games" is a new level of bad for him. He had or paced for between 40 and 45 points from 2015-2020 and got a ton of powerplay points in the past.

I will admit though, Ristolainen has seemingly steadied out a bit after his horrendous start of season with the Flyers. I remember he had like a 12% xGF% in his first 10 games in the year, his analytics still suck but they're a lot less bad than they once were.

Ristolainen was always a tire fire defensively but production was never his problem. Now he's terrible offensively and STILL a tire fire defensively.

Chuck Fletcher, the gift that keeps on giving. No way that guy keeps his job as their GM after this season or is he part of some circle jerk? Hard to believe he's been working in the league in a managerial role since '93-'94 yet is so out of the loop,

I remember thinking Risto was going to be the Sabres #1 defenceman for the next decade. He was really good for a couple years there in Buffalo.

I will admit, I believed in him longer than almost anyone. I even thought he might bounce back with Philly when he signed. A top 4 physical player who can hit 40+ points? That sounded worth about 5 is million to me.

The only guy wronger than me was Chuck Fletcher. Risto's been abysmal. The last time I saw Philly I didn't even realise Risto had played, and he got justifiably scratched the next game.

We all know it's going to take a long time to dig out of this mess. We have no confidence things will be done right until the old crew is 100% gone.
