Weekly sports ratings: MLB ASG, Gold Cup finale, top charts

Airing in primetime on broadcast television for the first time, the WNBA was still unable to get over the million viewer threshold as 850,000 viewers tuned in for Saturday’s All-Star Game. That was still good enough to rank as the most-watched WNBA All-Star Game in 16 years (2007: 950K). (Figures for Friday’s three-point shootout were not immediately available.)

Friday’s USWNT-Vietnam match averaged 5.26 million viewers on FOX and an additional 810,000 on Telemundo. The final round of the British Open ranked a distant second with 3.35 million viewers on NBC, marking the least-watched final round of the event since 2014.

Wednesday’s United States-Netherlands FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage match, a rematch of the 2019 final, averaged a 3.1 rating and 6.43 million viewers on FOX — the largest single-network group stage audience on record and the seventh-largest regardless of round. Figures include a streaming audience of 197,000 on Fox Sports digital platforms, also a group stage record. Spanish-language coverage on Telemundo and Universo averaged a 0.6 and 1.17 million, bringing the combined totals up to 3.7 and 7.59 million. Keep in mind figures for both FOX and Telemundo include pre-match coverage; the match window figure is almost certainly higher.

Ratings: Women's World Cup, racing, baseball

Thursday’s Argentina-South Africa FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage match averaged 887,000 viewers on FS1, trailing only Brazil-South Korea in 2015 (965K) as the most-watched non-U.S. group stage match ever on the network. It also ranks second for this year’s tournament (excluding U.S. matches) behind only Canada-Nigeria on FOX on the opening night of play.

Earlier in the week, Colombia-Brazil averaged 661,000 on FS1 Monday night. Both matches outperformed the network’s 2019 average for non-U.S. group stage windows (449K).

Thursday’s Spain-Netherlands FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinal averaged a 0.9 rating and 1.78 million viewers on FOX, trailing only Germany-Sweden in 2019 (1.88M) as the most-watched quarterfinal on record that did not involve the United States. The Thursday night timeslot was originally set aside for the USWNT, but the team failed to win its group (and then fell short of the quarterfinals entirely). Spain’s win delivered the fourth-largest audience of the tournament, trailing the two primetime USWNT group stage matches and Sweden-USWNT in the round of 16.

Women's World Cup viewership down big

English-language of the FIFA Women’s World Cup averaged 669,000 viewers across FOX and FS1, down 60% from 2019 (1.66M) and the smallest audience for the event since 2007 on ESPN and ESPN2 (288K). As in 2007, most matches aired in the overnight hours and the United States failed to make the final. Compared to the 2007 Women’s World Cup Final — both the last to air in an early morning timeslot and the last not to feature the United States — viewership jumped 150% from 664,000 for Germany-Brazil on ESPN2.

Overall, Florida State’s blowout win — which peaked with 10.3 million viewers — delivered the third-largest Labor Day weekend audience since that 2016 game. Notre Dame-Ohio State averaged 10.53 million last year and Alabama-Florida State 12.34 million in 2017, both in ABC’s traditional Saturday night window.

In other week one action, NBC averaged 3.7 million for West Virginia-Penn State in the debut of its weekly primetime Big Ten game (including additional streaming data not tracked by Nielsen). NBC said Monday that it was the network’s second-most watched Labor Day weekend game since 2015 (trailing Notre Dame-Michigan in 2018 at 7.2 million), but it was just the third such game over that span. Viewership peaked at 4.4 million. NBC also said Saturday’s ECU-Michigan game on Peacock was its most-streamed college football game ever. The network did not disclose any viewership figures.
