OT: TV Movie Thread Part Iii

I'm actually replying to your previous post about your injury-filled hockey career. I always thought of you as an Orr/M. Lemieux blend/hybrid. I had a cup of coffee in an instructional baseball league. It's lower than Class A minor league baseball.

Maybe if you meant Colton and not Bobby. I was 10 years old when I first saw Slap Shot in 1977 and that became an important developmental force in my personality and hockey playing days.

I went from 0 penalty minutes through the last game of my first season to 27 PIMs in the last game. Then I think I lead my leagues in PIMs the rest of my life.

I was the #6 dman my senior year of high school. In a city of less than 1/4M people, we won the city title.

I can't believe NHL players use white stick tape. So uncool. Black is mandatory. I miss the 90s. An NHL player could elbow someone in the head & get two minutes.

Finally saw Thunderbolts today. I enjoyed it even though I'm not a really a fan of Marvel movies (although I did collect comics as a kid). Florence Pugh never fails to deliver.

I recently finally saw the Brutalist on Max. I didn't love it to be honest, but I imagine that it was better in the theater on bigger screens.

The Studio s1 is finally over. I enjoyed most of the season. Gad to see it renewed for a second season.

Alexander Skarsgard is pretty funny in Murderbot.

I enjoyed the Brutalist, then i found out it was made up.

I like Adrien Brody, he's great in everything he's in, but didn't think it was Oscar winning level.

Yeah, when it first came out, I thought it was supposed to be non-fiction.

Brody is great method actor. Nothing beats his performance in the Pianist though.

Came back from Mission Impossible. Quite enjoyed it. It's the most epic and ambitious MI ever, and watching Cruise do those stunts, you can feel the stakes are real. There's surprisingly some real pathos in several character relationships. It's unequivocally a silly mess plot-wise, but the franchise lost the plot literally a long time ago.

Did any of the movies ever have a plot?

Excited to read this, feel like the people that really like the franchise are loving it, while others are a bit down on it.

Can’t wait to see it next week.

I'll see it next week, but after they killed off Ilsa, I feel the same way I did while watching the Rangers late in the season. Just going through the motions. I'm actually re-watching the first MI movie (1996) now.

First one was quite good. The franchise almost literally right after that decided to be action-driven instead of suspense.

I enjoyed it more than the final Bond. It's crazy when you think about it that Cruise has been Ethan Hunt for 30 years, twice as long as Daniel Craig was Bond. The latter was always a mostly dour exercise while this movie (and most of the McQuarrie MIs) was fun and made you enjoy being there. I didn't see it on IMAX but probably the best way to experience it for the two major set pieces, the submarine dive and the biplane dogfight.

I miss Ilsa. People say that the Hunt character loves his wife the most. I think he truly loves Elsa. Grace is an ok character, but Hunt's attraction to her is head-scratching even if he's got a thing for damsels in distress.

I've enjoyed them (for their action).

I also watched all of the TV eps when they aired and that was the last time (if not the only time) I saw a plot connected to MI.

We finished Ghost protocol so have I think 3 left. I hope to see the new one next week.

My teenager and I are in agreement with this ranking so far (best to least):

MI 1
MI 4
MI 3
MI 2

1 is the best because it has that suspense factor and is more grounded (as much as you can with mask disguises and such) due to de Palma being a truly great director. It’s not quite Ronin level on spyguy / suspense/ action but it’s nearly as good. Jean Reno could be the same dude in both movies actually.

I loved Ronin. Not that I know whether the spycraft was accurate or not, but it was great without all the whiz bang and gadgetry of Bond and MI.

I'll take Ronin over MI. John Frankenheimer (director) is a name I haven't thought of in a long time. David Mamet co-wrote it.

After re-watching the first MI movie yesterday for the first time in years, I have to say that I didn't love it.

My rankings:

Fallout (2018)
Rogue Nation (2015)
MI 3 (2006)

Ghost Protocol (2011)
Dead Reckoning (2023)
MI 1 (1996)

MI 2 (2000)
