Jays claim 2B/SS Breyvic Valera off waivers from the Yankees. 2 things stand out.

1) That's the most made-up name I've ever heard. It's like this guy I know named Joey Joe-Joe Junior Shabbadoo.

2) For real, browsing some stuff about him and his FG page seems to indicate that he's an above-average defender with a AAAA bat whose best use is in the minors or as an emergency warm-body in case of MLB injury (which would appear to be his niche here as a sort of "oh hell, what if Bo's really hurt" type move.). He spent like 7 years in the Cards' system before being sent to the dodgers as cheap depth when Corey Seager got hurt in 2017, then went to Baltimore as part of the shotgun scatter of "talent" the O's took back for Machado, then was shipped to San Francisco for cash and finally claimed by the Yankees off waivers earlier this season when 99% of their roster were hurt in a rash of freak injuries worse than the Springfield Nuclear Plant softball team.

To make room, the Jays designated Ryan Dull for assignment after failing to impress by not recording a single out in his entire Blue Jays career (totaling 0 batters faced).

The "what does all this mean?" takeaway is: nothing. Dull was just waiver fodder, and he's an easy sacrifice now to add more waiver fodder as a precautionary move likely in response to Bichette's getting whacked in the face on Thursday and missing Friday's game. There's no grander meaning, no scheme in play, and no "but what about the kids on the roster?" angle to be concerned with. It's just precautionary depth for precautionary depth's sake using fungible roster spots and replaceable players.

In other, more relevant news, that sucks about Quinones. Hopefully this ends up like Thomas Pannone's suspension did where nobody even remembers it because Pannone has made it to the bigs to be a not-terrible pitcher.

Hell, I had to double check to make sure I wasn't mis-remembering that Marcus Stroman got a PED suspension in the minors.

One thing that is interesting is how often Shapiro/Atkins claim guys off of waivers, only to DFA them 2 days later when they claim someone else.

More importantly....should we try to pick up Sanchez again in the off-season? We'll be signing a bunch of reclamation project SP anyway, and perhaps this shoulder surgery will fix what was ailing Aaron.

He might want to turn the page, but I'd seriously consider it...

He will want no part of coming back here. I see him either as a tiger or marlin next year

Aaron Sanchez seemed pretty sad that he was traded and its not like Toronto dealt him to a bottom feeding team. They sent him to a place to win and he got hurt. I dont see why he'd have animosity over that.

It appeared that like Donaldson he and the training staff weren’t on the same page.

That was a real lacklustre lineup today. I don’t get the point of Drury at 1b

That's pretty much how the waiver wire works league-wide, especially among the weaker teams.

Blue Jays officially can’t pick higher then fifth in the draft next year. Good news is the closest team to passing the Jays is the Pirates, who are two games ahead of the Jays with six games left. The Jays also hold the tiebreaker because they had the worse record last year so they are really three games behind the Pirates.

Problem is, Pirates are in free fall.

There's something very transient feeling about the Yankees' 100 win season in 2019. Their lineup is full of career years and unlikely 1st year performances. Then there's a fragile starting staff. 100 win teams usually have 3-4 dominant starters. They'll come back to the pack.

To play devils advocate they have had a tonne of injuries and missed their best hitter and pitcher most of the season.

“He’s a big guy and he’s athletic, but something Vladdy told me last night is, ‘I’m going to go this off-season and get in the best shape possible and you’ll see me next year. I’m going to be a different guy,’” Febles relayed. “He wants to be good and he knows what he needs to do. His dad already told him. He said, ‘My dad is already on top of me about it.’ You’ll see him. He’ll be better because he’s hungry.”
