But, but....

This is truly awful.

Wow.

Are you guys kidding me?

Do the Leafs own the Toronto Sun?

Talk about biases.
Its nice to get excited about something but this is way over the top.

Is Clarkson's agent paying them off?

Now I get why the city acts a certain way about hockey and understand why people dislike the media.

Let this be a lesson that the "real world" is no different than a stereotypical college sorority where image >>> ability. If you've got the look, the name and the background, you'll get offered a seat at the table.

I think people fell in love with this guy because of that Don Cherry type of crap ... he's a truculent, humble, traditional, probably knows his way around a farm, good old Canadian boy who looks the part and definitely brings lots of intangibles! You can practically smell the healthy Ontario cow ****.

I find it kinda funny that TSN has this sort of running vendetta going with the Leafs, especially when taking into consideration that Dave Nonis is apparently the source of hockey's greatest insider

you'd think they'd be a little less malicious just out of gratitude and self preservation, articles like this get noticed by guys like Tanenbaum who if he reads it, may possibly become outraged and drop the hammer on Dave and then what will Daren do for a source

I guess they don't like players that forecheck because on most night Clarkson the only one that does!

Clarkson was bringing the heat earlier this year and is a tough MFer to play against most nights. That Clarkson/Komarov/Santorelli line was boss.

paying someone 5.25M to forecheck for you isnt very good cap management

Guy reminds me of Ethan Moreau. He would take the stupidest penalties then call out the PKers for not doing what theyre paid to. He's being benched but doesn't think it has anything to do with his play...

Always saw him more of a decent cycle guy with some grit, then stand @ the net & chip a few in. Figured he'd go to a possession team.

Not really surprised that he's not finding success in TO, not really sure how Leafs management didn't see this coming.

Is it more of them trying to fit a square peg into a round hole?

It was suppose to be tongue-in-cheek. The Toronto Sun is the most sensationalistic rag in NA.

He grew up in Toronto, I doubt he's ever even seen a farm.

He was the product of a weak free agent class and a franchise in desperate need of hope.

How the heck did Clarkson ever manage to carve out an NHL career prior to Toronto? He looks like he lacks NHL skill. It's perplexing how he ever had any success. Daniel Winnik is like 100x the player Clarkson is and he was a dumpster dive signing in the summer...

The sun is a tabloid and the writers don't know anything about hockey.

All they do is write crap to get a rise out of people. It's best to just not aknowledge it.

Why does Donut Dave still have a job in the NHL? Absolutely horrendous GM

Haha I remember how relieved I was when he got canned in Vancouver. Gillis was 10 times the GM Nonis is. Nonis couldn't make a trade to save his life. Hence the name "Nonuts"

Why does Donut Dave still have a job in the NHL? Absolutely horrendous GM

and they had guys like Loiselle, Poulin, a lot of "advisors" like Fletch for a while, Dudley - how could so many "great hockey people" make so many poor decisions? But more and more I think it's purely Kessel. I know it's fashionable to pick on Phil nowadays but when your best player isn’t (one of) your hardest workers, one who cares the most, it’s really tough to break that losing psyche.

The caring, it needs to be there.

Leafs play the Isles tonight and for a lot of years, the Isles suffered through similar droughts. Tavares was brought in as a savior but not surrounded with talent – they had a payroll that was cap circumvention and embarrassing. But the work ethic was never in question. Snow’s provided Capuano and Tavares with depth and talent (within a strict budget) and there are drastic improvements.

Nonis (and Burke before him) have severely mistaken the talent AND character of their acquisitions, their core. I think that is inexcusable for a GM. That’s what (I believe) people mean by the “culture†of the team. I don’t think you can teach players to CARE. Maybe young players who are still establishing themselves, learning how to be a pro (like Rielly, Gardiner – next year, Nylander, Percy, maybe Leivo) still have a chance but they need a leadership group that comes to work every day.
One thing I love about how Tavares has handled Long Island is that he works his tail off and has always said positive things, even under really dire circumstances. He’s always faced the media (well, it’s one guy) and put the onus on himself to be better. And the reason they are better THIS YEAR is NOT because of Tavares, who’s been average at best (by his standards), but the tenacity and work ethic of everyone on the team – Okposo, Bailey, Nielsen, Strome, Lee, Nelson, the 4th line – along with the augmented players like Leddy/Boychuk, Halak.

Nonis has completely missed the boat with this. Either he’s brought in character who can’t play (Clarkson) or are not talented enough (Winnik, Santorelli) or overspent on players that don’t care enough (Kessel). The rest are very good/serviceable – JVR, Lupul, Kadri, Franson (maybe miscast – like Bozak, Robidas, Polak). At least when Snow was laughed at, he was building a base of talent through the draft, and much of that outside the 1st round (it’s not just draft position).
What a disaster. /rant!

Clarkson had the fifth best Corsi in the league two years ago (among full time players).

Just another little tidbit for the fire. :)

My brother and I used to joke about how Clarkson was the fan who won chance of a lifetime to play with the Devils...
