Wasn't TSN one of the leaders in the "Clarkson is the #1 free agent" campaign?

Nobody with a brain was buying that.

The hilarious thing is as many have pointed out, he LEFT money and term on the table to sign in Toronto (Ottawa and Edmonton were the two in it right up to the end iirc.)

In a parallel universe somewhere out there, there exists an even worse version of Clarkson's contract, if that's even scientifically possible.

That's just hearsay. We don't really know if it's true or not. Why people even are bringing it up is quite hilarious. 'It's a dumb contract but someone else offered more so that totally makes it better'.
Yeah , nope.

Yeah , nope.

No one is saying that makes it any better. As it stands it's one of the worst contracts ever but the hilarious part is it could have been even worse.

As painful as the past two seasons have been & the immediate future looks, at least the Devils aren't saddled with this albatross. I don't think many Devils fans were that sad to see him go, especially since we knew he was going to get overpaid as a free agent. Just didn't think his contract would be this bad.

He's earning approx 4 million / season more than he should on a longterm contract and has a NMC. Who's the dumb one?

If a moron inherits $10 million from some deceased relative, does it suddenly make him smart?

No disputing that Nonis is an idiot; no disputing that Clarkson's agent must be intelligent. None of that really speaks to the fact that Clarkson is dumb, especially when it comes to hockey IQ -- although I would suspect that it carries over to all areas of his life.

The shocking thing is that the cap hit is probably the least egregious aspect of the contract.

I guess they don't like players that forecheck because on most night Clarkson the only one that does!

Clarkson was bringing the heat earlier this year and is a tough MFer to play against most nights. That Clarkson/Komarov/Santorelli line was boss.

How the heck did Clarkson ever manage to carve out an NHL career prior to Toronto? He looks like he lacks NHL skill. It's perplexing how he ever had any success. Daniel Winnik is like 100x the player Clarkson is and he was a dumpster dive signing in the summer...

Not so sure.

I have a feeling that Clarkson's agent went to Nonis, and told him, "hai bro, we're leaving money on the table to come to Toronto, can you set the contract with a NMC and money set up this way, you'd be a sweetie pie!"

And Nonis bought it.

The guys a total knob.

Yeah, you're being scratched to send a message to the team, not because you've played like crap for the majority of your time here. :shakehead

Unless the message was "You guys are allowed to score goals now", I'm not really sure what he's talking about.

You scratch players like Phil Kessel to send a message to the team. You scratch David Clarkson to keep everyone else from being pulled into the black hole that is his lack of hockey skills and sense, and thus ending up in an inescapable dimension of suck that few normal people could ever comprehend. The hockey version of hell itself.

I have no real issues with him as a player (if he was on the 4th line where he belongs), but his awful contract just sours me on the entire situation.

I honestly feel bad for Leafs fans.

The organization is a complete train wreck and yet they have no problem completely bending each and every fan over at the cash register.

I know it would never happen but it would be great if those seats started emptying out.

Leafs games are one of the most expensive to attend in the entire NHL.

.....and for what?

A lot of the tickets come from corporate seats, especially the ones near the ice. Most fans can usually only afford upper level tickets and even then not everyone goes. The Leafs are like a religion in Toronto, but that is more based off on our history than whatever joke of an organization it is now. They increase prices every year thinking we'll keep going and the sad part is, people still do...

I forgot this little nugget from his recent scrums.

Dude doesn't even acknowledge that he himself needs to be better. Way to dodge the question you hack.

I have a good friend who is a lifelong Leafs fan, he tells me all about it.......he lives in Peterborough, ON and will travel quite far to see the Leafs play at away arenas because it is cheaper than seeing a game at home.

I'd rather drive to Ottawa/Buffalo/Detroit/Columbus or even further out to Montreal/Minnesota to go see a Leaf game than to go to Toronto. That's how expensive it is.

The Clarkson-signing in my mind looked borderline fishy.

The TSN-hype train ("30 goal scorer", "Wendel Clark")
The Lebrun tweet, never substantiated but endlessly repeated, about Clarkson leaving money on the table to play for his hometown team
The way none of the pundits brought up the glaring weaknesses in his game (can't skate, can't pass)

It all looks orchestrated to deceive, but I mean what would've been the purpose? It almost defies reason that people with that level of financial responsibilty would be so...dumb.

It doesn't, when you consider the Leafs are the team that frets about money the least. It makes perfect sense that he ended up there.

i used to make fun of the Leino contract but this one was just making a joke out of that.

Clarksons contract has gotta be one of if not the worst ever when you exclude players whose contracts go in the dumps because of injuries like dipietro etc.
