Trouble at NTDP?

How many Michigan kids got suspended or demoted?

Both Higgins and Yanakeff are from southeastern Michigan.

And there was a kid that turned down a spot at the NTDP this year to stay at home and yet he still got in trouble for drinking.

look considering i go to school with these guyz they just made a mistake, and Johns is stickin with the program, he wasnt booted off he was just suspended for the rest of the year, but hes still training with the team. no u 18 guyz were involved

no man im not a brother of any of the players im just friends with a lot of the guyz and they dont like talking about it so y should anyone else, they r teenagers they make mistakes, if they werent on the usa team they would get no publicity, but cus they r future stars they have to act like it, wtf. u guyz need to hop off theyre sack and at least wait till they get drafted or something.

Really??...one already has enrolled in a school for this year in an OHL city. Plus another was in an OHL arena on the weekend checking things out.

Well this a career path they have chosen, they are the ones that commit to colleges at 16. They put themselves in the spotlight. This is Hockey's Future not Hockey's Present. Heck there's been a thread on the 2014 draft already. Half of the NTDP are in their draft year anyways which we have every right to talk about the upcoming draft.

I understand they want to move on but people talk about this. They know it goes on and shouldn't let that bother them. They need to focus on the task at hand. For the U-18 guys its to bring gold home.

Well pal, you should know that if you want to make it big you need to be accountable for your actions. Hockey is a very prosperous industry and the players are always going to be under the microscope. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

U guyz seem to know more about their lives then they do. They are human beings first, students second, and hockey players third

Come back in the summer when at least half dozen of your buddies sign with teams in the OHL.

Right now we got Cam Fowler, Brandon Maxwell, Jeremy Morin looks to be a lock, Jerry D'Amigo looks like he's following Maxwell and Morin to Kitchener.

Stephen Johns and Kenny Ryan are being heavily pursued by Windsor.

Adam Clendening, Chasen Balisy and Jared Tinordi are going to get calls from the Hunter family

The agent for future Kitchener Rangers goalie Brandon Maxwell has slammed USA Hockey for mishandling the 17-year-old Cambridge product.

"They should be ashamed of themselves," Maxwell representative Darren Ferris said yesterday.

Maxwell, a Florida-born dual citizen, has been demoted within the U.S. national team development program.

Ferris, who works for Bobby Orr's agency, says USA Hockey has disciplined Maxwell for breaking a commitment to play for Boston College and opting to play in the Ontario Hockey League next season....

This program is quickly becoming a joke. The dictatorship isn't working. Spend all that money to develop 40 players. The u17's train together year round but can't win against teams thrown together just before u17 tournament. The u18's train together year round but seldom win the u18 tournament. Every year less and less of the elite players are attending this program and with players being suspended, booted out of the program and punished for making a decision on their hockey future, you would have to be crazy to commit to this program in the future, particularly if you are dual citizen who can play for Canada or the US. Why would you play for USA Hockey when you can play for a first class organization like Hockey Canada and for a country whose teams continually rise to the occasion and win championships, instead of the US who continually choke and fall short of expectations at every level?

I think you're points are a bit tainted, but are correct in some regards. Five out of Six Minnesotans turned down the NTDP U17 team this year. The team would have been better with them, but the appeal to join just wasn't strong enough. I think the program would be better off AVOIDING dual citizens, even if they are the most talented players available, and especially if their dad is the parent that is Canadian.

BTW, Maxwell may be good enough to play for Canada's U18 squad, but maybe he isn't. I hate to say it, but I think some of these dual citizens play for the US because they aren't good enough to make Team Canada. Like I said though, they should be avoided in the first place.

Well, the cloak & dagger relationship between the NCAA (or more specifically college hockey) and the USNTDP isn't much of a shocker. I think the program's agenda needs to be re-evaluated, because as far as I know, the express purpose of the USNTDP isn't just to be a feeder program for the NCAA. I thought it was to develop elite American talent and improve performance in junior and later senior level international competition.

The point made about Fowler is a good one. You'll see the hypocricy rise to the surface with him. There is no way he'll be sanctioned for bailing on Notre Dame and going to the OHL. He's an elite prospect and will be treated with kid gloves. Maxwell's a pretty good prospect, but is nowhere near Fowler's class. Fowler will be at the eval camp this summer and will be on the WJC team this winter.

I'm not sure I agree with either point. Maxwell is a very good goaltender, especially at the junior level. I think he'd have a fair chance of making Canada's U18 team. I also don't think it's prudent to avoid a player just because of their background. If they're eligible, willing, and good enough, they should make the team.

A lot of hyperbole here. While I would agree that the USNTDP doesn't function like it should or create the success level it should at the U20 WJC's, it is a top-notch program for hockey skills, instruction, and strength and conditioning development. It's also had a alot of success at the U17 and U18 levels, with the U.S. being the only country (I believe) to medal at the U18s over the last five years.

This dual-citizen issue is really a non-factor. This is all about the program being a funnel to the NCAA than anything else. That does have to change.

I'm fairly certain that the USNTDP has declined to invite players for fear they would be turned down. I don't think that's too different from NOT inviting players they fear may back out.

Really, the elephant in the room is that (I think) the entire reason for the program was to keep kids OUT of the CHL, which is why you often see players from non-traditional areas and from Michigan on the team... they're the most likely to play CHL. Trying to hold on to dual citizens is often an effort in futility, and it makes the US look like it needs to win ALL of the dual citizen battles in order to be competitive internationally. I'm sick of it. I say forget them and go with the kids who play for the name on the front of the jersey.

They can do both in the CHL.
Any player that plays in the CHL gets one year of university paid for with every year of CHL service. They can pick and choose which university regardless of costs. One Kitchener Rangers is getting his education at Notre Dame at how much a year for a foreign student?
The player must decide after 2 years of pro if he'll contunue with hockey and lose this option or go back to school.

Exactly. A CHL team is going to offer an elite American prospect and education package at 16-17 for 4 years of a college of their choice if pro hockey doesnt work out. Most NCAA teams dont even give full schollys, especially to the whole team.

You would have to be stupid to turn down a 4 year college education package (scholarship) from the CHL and develop in the best junior league in the world.
