if matt read wasn't insanely hyped how did he get the contract that he did (as a college FA)

I think your definition of insane is different from teh rest of us.

Read played well and parlayed it into a contract.

TVR has done the same thing.

What's the worst case scenario? JVR gets to see his brother play a few NHL games, and we get a half decent AHL dman for the price of a contract spot? Big woop.

And if he works out? We could get a pretty decent palyer.

Just wondering but would it have any affect on our cap or are the college free agents always two way contracts?

The effects of his ankle injury will be a concern, but hopefully he recovers fully. Vids of these players always make them look like the second coming, but I'm curious to know what are considered his weaknesses? As well, what is his potential ceiling speculated to be by the scouts?

I'll just leave this here for the dummies saying not to take a chance on free college FAs

Around the same time the Rangers signed Gilroy they signed Girardi and he worked out pretty well.

To be fair Girardi was a different situation. He took the OHL route, and played a few years in the Rangers minor league system so they had a good idea of what they potentially had with him. Gilroy was an overhyped college free agent.

Can't the just release plugs like Abney and Lasch midseason if they really want to sign a couple of these FA's?

Contracts are guaranteed, so releasing a player does no good unless they are picked up on waivers by another team which is extremely unlikely at this stage. Have to wait until contracts expire or are bought out during the summer.

Just wondering but would it have any affect on our cap or are the college free agents always two way contracts?

College free agents usually are waiver exempt, so can be sent to the AHL at the team's discretion. If they occupy an NHL roster spot, their contract will count against the cap.

Tanev, Krug, Dekeyser, Bozak, Scrivens, and Read were all free wallets and that are now making an impact in the NHL.

Oh yeah, forgot about Krug. That was a nice pick-up, surprised he's doing so well with his size too. He's like a Marc-Andre Bergeron that is actually capable of playing defense.

What is with people being against these signings? It just makes you shake your head and wonder what possible disadvantage this could bring to the organization.

At worst you're signing a guy that can help the Marlies. Having a successful farm team can only help the organization as a whole. Spencer Abbott is the Marlies leading scorer and could likely handle a short term call up in the NHL. Now wouldn't you rather have a guy like that in your organization rather than making a decision to turn your back on the whole FA crop because there is a small chance that they become and NHL player?

If the kid didn't have van Riemsdyk in his name was we even consider him? I can't believe no1 asked this question till now...

If you follow prospects much, then you might. Not saying I was, but those "prospect nuts" out there have been, I'm sure. There are certainly some articles that are all about him, for those who are interested......

The THN article you linked is about Brendan van Riemsdyk. He's draft eligible this year.

The more important question: How should the Leafs handle the names on the jersey.

Do they go with:J. Van Riemsdyk and T. Van Riemsdyk OR JVR and TVR :sarcasm:

what is there to lose?
Roster spot and a good chance at wasting time . Remember how Irwin got right into the team when he signed? Not saying that will happen again, but its pointless. I'd rather focus on the talent we already have.

That's like never approaching a girl for the rest of your life because you got turned down a few times.
No you're totally right, comparing asking a girl out to running a billion dollar hockey team is the exact same

You either get the and find success with them or you don't. If we took tat attitude oak isn't with us right now
We have players already in the system that may or may not already fail, why waste a spot on him? Because he may or may not fail? Its a waste of time. Majority of these guys wont be anything, at least try to develop the players already on the Marlies or in the juniors. We have Leivo , McKegg , Percy , Ryan , Ross, Granberg etc that should get a chance

You left out Bozak.

It is like finding four wallets. Three of them have no money in them, but one of them has $1,000. I guess you could argue that the laws of probability say that you are usually wasting your time picking up a lost wallet.
Bozak didn't fail. Thats why I didn't mention him as a failure. I'm sick of hearing all this free wallets crap . How many "free wallets" has failed already? Not just NCAA kids either, guys form overseas? Owuya, Rynnas , Gustvasson , Mueller , Brunnstrom etc

Will we ever learn? With the likes of Irwin,Hanson ,and Gysbers having failed miserably you'd think they'd be more cautious but they seem to always be in the mix for these college free agents.

Makes the one Bozak all the more worthwhile...
