IDK what the eligibility rules are. They're pretty full between the pipes, though--Hank, Georgiev, Mazanec, Nell, Halverson. Shestyorkin on the way, Huska in two years. Wall maybe. So who knows if they're looking to invite anyone.

I don't think you're allowed if you have two full years as a North American pro. Georgiev only has one--Nell has one plus the very tail end of the previous season. Those two would be okay. Shesterkin's KHL team will already be playing games by then. College guys--usually it's after they're signed. Most kids go back to college late August.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that I thought Shesterkin would come, or the college kids (they can't due to eligibility). Just that, if we have guys that can come that are eligible, I'd think they would be the ones to come, since I wouldn't think we have our eyes on too many other goalies even as a TC invite at the moment. Though I suppose we could conceivably have an ECHL spot, so maybe we do invite a guy to TC and then camp and sign him to an AHL/ECHL deal.

y u want tis.

When they inevitably don't score a combined 4 goals and 8 assists per game, people will declare them busts. "They can't even dominate a bunch of kids and ECHLer's, how can they even be good at the NHL level."

It will be an all time low for our board

On the other hand if they do score a bunch then it would also be "Oh sure, they dominated a bunch of kids and ECHLer - doesn't mean anything" (which is actually more or less true)

typically, aside maybe for goalies, NYR send very few guys who have completed a full NA pro season, so Gropp +Fontaine+ Leedahl up front seems unlikely. Chytil had a virtually full NA season, but is so damn young 8^)

So between being stuck at home sick and having no games to watch for a couple of more weeks I decided to look back in time at the Rangers roster for the last 3 Traverse City Tournaments to attempt to answer the burning questions that many of you have raised about who will be on the roster at the 2018 tournament. I largely agree with Eco Bones' projections.

Over each of the last 3 years the Rangers have invited 2 goalies, 7-9 defensemen and 13-15 forwards. The number of invitees ha declined from 12 in 2015 to 6 last year as the number of available draftees has increased.

Goalies -- Halverson was invited in 2015 and 2016 but not last year. I don't see him participating. The goalies last year were Giorgiev and Nell. It's possible both are back but they might bring in invitee instead of Georgiev.

Defense -- Day was invited in 2016 and 2017 but I think it is likely he is back. Crawley, Pedrie and Pionk played in 2018. I doubt that Pionk is invited, Crawley and Pedrie are possible. Lindgren, Hajek, Keane and Gross are locks. There could be room for 2 invitees depending on what the Rangers decide about Crawley and Pedrie.

Forwards -- If Ryan Gropp attends it will be his fourth tournament. I think the Rangers may want to use the camp to see if Gropp shows something. Gettinger and Ronning have participated in two camps but I think they are locks. First timers last year were Anderson, Chytil, Fontaine, Leedahl and Lettieri. I think there is a good chance they are all back. New free agents Lindqvist and Meskanen will participate as will Brett Howden. I also agree with Eco that Hartford signees Salvaggio and Melanson seem certain come. Even if all participate there still is room for 1-3 invitees.

So I think we have Eco Bones list plus 4-6 invitees. One invitee could be Owen Sound center, Kevin Hancock who was invited to the Rangers development camp.

I'd like us to do well. I mean it's better than doing poorly. Winning it would be nice but it ain't the Stanley Cup by a long shot. I think we could put a pretty good team together if we feel like it.

Alexandar Georgiev--maybe.

Ryan Lindgren
Libor Hajek
Brandon Crawley-maybe
Sean Day
Joey Keane
Nico Gross

Brett Howden
Lias Andersson-maybe
Filip Chytil-maybe
Ville Meskanen
Michael Lindqvist
Ty Ronning
Tim Gettinger
Vinni Lettieri-maybe
Ryan Gropp-maybe
Gabriel Fontaine-maybe
Dawson Leedahl-maybe
Drew Melanson
Jason Salvaggio

Doubt Chytil and Lias play.

Howden, Hajek and Lindgren should be locks. Hopefully they kill it.

If they are not on the TC roster would indicate that there's VERY little chance of them not being with NYR at the start of the season.

Obviously they if they are in TC would not automatically mean that they are not with NYR (i.e. in Hartford).

imo there is a less than 1% chance that they aren't both there...there is always the odd chance that they are back in europe and have visa issues coming back but there is a less than 0% chance the rangers don't want them there.

Sweden and the Czech Republic are both part of the EU. They don't need a visa to enter the US.

Not as a tourist of course. But this is a work situation, right? They’d be getting paid to play i assume. And they’d have to pay dem taxes.

I travel to the US for work twice a year and I don't need a visa.

Edit: Never mind. Apparently business and work is different haha. But they are already contracted by the Rangers. They should already have the paperwork sorted out to enter the country as tax-paying residents.

By previous standards they would play. We have seen TC as a good way of getting ready for the season and as I understand it when older players haven't been in its been because they have not been allowed by the organizers. The rules are supposedly 'flexible' on who can participate.

But -- and without really having an opinion on what is right -- I do hope we seriously consider what is best for the kids. Its two weeks of a short off-season.

I don’t understand why people assume Lias and Chytil won’t be playing. I think people underestimate every year how good the competition is at Traverse City. It’s far superior to something like juniors.

There are guys that have played 4 years in college at this tournament. The lack of age restrictions and grey area around what constitutes a prospect means you’re going up against physically mature 24 year olds.

Every year we project one of our 18-year olds to come into this tournament and light it up, and every year they fade into obscurity. I watched a fresh out of college Carl Hagelin look like pure ass in TC awhile back, and he was further along in development than both Lias and Chytil, who is barey 19. Can we attribute part of that to it being summer? No doubt, but it’s equally a testament to how strong of a tournament this is.

It would be stupid to have either of them sit this tournament out.

There's no way Pajuniemi is playing at Traverse. Not because he's not good enough (he is) but because hockey pre-season in Europe has already started. Same goes for Ragnarsson.

also current college kids don't play, so no Barron

the lead re Brogan Rafferty, well, same as Barron, as an active NCAA player, not likely

if the posters here are correct, and Gross return to Oshawa, he'd be a likely include

as i mentioned earlier, it would be unprecedented to have 5 or more skaters with a full year NA pro experience, so i don't expect all of Gropp, Leedahl, Crawley and Fontaine to be joining Chytil, but this is a new NYR era, somaybe

more likely, they fill out the roster with the typical UDFA current/recent Major Junior guys, and/or some unsigned recent NCAA grads (well guys who have exhausted eligibility, with or without degree)

Anderson and Chytil finished off last season in the NHL and will be competing against NHL players at NHL speed shortly in training camp. There’s really no need to expose them to such a drastically lower level of competition and slower pace as compared to the NHL. You already know they’re past that and it could reintroduce bad habbits, and comes with risk of unnecessary injury with little justification.

And as others said for other reasons, it’s really a lose lose situation.

They finished last year in the nhl because the rangers were outta it and wanted to give them a cup of coffee. I don't think it's a guarantee either of them are in the nhl next year. It's certainly possible, perhaps even probable...but in no way a foregone conclusion

I think t.c. is an important tournament. So I think you send the kids that give you the beat chance to both win, and to see what those kids can do against some of their peers.

The only thing I agree with is a risk of injury. It’s difficult to to know for sure what is the plan Rangers have for these two to start the regular season. They might have it in conditional terms as well. So if Gorton & Co. want to wait and see what Filip and Lias do in preseason before they make a decision then tc should be a part of it.

Only if they are fully set on the prospects kicking off the season with the Rangers instead of Wolfpack, then you could consider withholding them to avoid injuries.
