Yep. People will tune in for 2 minutes and think they are watching cell phone video of some friends playing beer league hockey.

You can't a really do a quality broadcast of that tournament.
You bring one HD camera and put it at center ice with an announcer. Where are you getting it would he cell phone footage? That’s what we get with the streaming crap they will air on foxsports and barely be able to tell who is who.

Nobody would be expecting WC type coverage lol

Just because you have a camera capable of HD resolution and frame rate does not mean you will get HD resolution and frame rate. A lot goes on in between the camera and your viewing screen.

With Toronto now involved there will be a lot more interest in Canada in watching this tournament. There really isnt any reason they couldnt broadcast this other than the fact they dont want to.

Doesn't NHL Network broadcast these games in this tournament???? I could have sworn I saw that last season.

MSG is a major major broadcast company, i'm sure they have the technology..

The Rangers broadcast it once but that was about 7-8 years ago--anyway. The Red Wings will broadcast but usually it's just the one camera angle and there is no play by play or commentary unless the Red Wings are actually playing. I really don't know a lot about broadcasting games--maybe there's a shortage space to do it and maybe even the Red Wings want exclusive control over the televised material.

There are a lot of things about this tournament that go unexplained.

The problem historically wasn't that MSG or other sports networks couldn't round up the needed technology to put on a decent broadcast, it was that Centre Ice Arena (it's two rinks) didn't have the infrastructure to support it. That place literally is not much different than your local neighborhood sheet of ice--they host beer leagues, open skates, youth hockey, high school stuff, etc. It's not a professional operation. For a long time they didn't even have the infrastructure to support a webcast as they only had a home-grade router for the people that worked there to use.

As mentioned earlier, IIRC they now have a mounted camera that is controlled remotely in the one rink, and another one up in the corner of the other rink. But I'm not sure, I didn't follow it last year and there may have been some improvements. Again though, it's not an arena setup for this kind of stuff and never really will be. If this was held in Flint where the Firebirds play it would be incredibly easy to do a broadcast. Much different infrastructure, though.

Well that's the thing, this is where the DRW have their training camp practices. It's not a professional arena or anything. It's just not equipped for a professional-level broadcast. And the tournament itself was never meant to be a public spectacle, just a more informal event for teams to evaluate their players.

Let’s start with this why the effort is worth it for Fox Sports but not for MSG?

Second, the Rangers will feature its top-3 prospects that made the organization’s prospect pool rank #1 in the whole NHL. If we’re just talking future merch sales, the organization should’ve been all over it trying to find exposure for these guys this early on their Rangers careers.

LIVU actually uses cell phone towers to transmit video and audio. U get breakup when the tower is maxed out or close but you could do it. Super cheap.

If MSG had access to a NEWBURT kit they could do it super cheap with multiple cams, mics etc.

It would require a single wide trailer outside the venu, web services and a generator. But now I’m giving trade secrets away.

As long as the audio is fine no one cares if the video isn't the best. If they really wanted to broadcast it they could do it on the cheap but let's be honest they have the money. The only time it has been on MSG was during the NBAs mini lockout and they needed content.

I've said it before and I will say it again: In previous years, there was no reason to show the tournament. 2019 is different. We just picked 2nd overall. Our prospect pool was ranked 1st by different sources. The Rangers themselves have been hyping up our prospect pool for months, every chance they get.

Not showing TCT, and not having any prospect content at all for that matter, not even on Youtube, like other NHL teams do, just does not rhyme with the way they have tried to get everyone interested in these young prospects.

As far as why it's worth it for Fox but not MSG, that's pretty straightforward. MSG, it's a cable channel and you either have it or you don't. No one is changing their provider to get MSG to watch TCT. MSG also clearly feels the ratings wouldn't justify whatever costs exist. Fox, on the other hand, has this Fox Sports Go app that they want people to download. Like me, I have Fox Sports and can use the Fox Sports Go app, but I don't have it on my phone because there's nothing on there that interests me. I will download the app for the TCT coverage. So will fans of other teams. Fox grows the install base of their app by covering these things, so for them, it's apparently worth it.

IDK, at the end of the day, I don't really see why any of this matters. It seems pretty irrelevant to the Rangers, to MSG Networks, etc. Whether casual fans have easy access to a few games at a prospect tournament doesn't seem important to anything. Fans will get to know these kids soon enough. But, I've said my piece on this many times over, and I'm just repeating myself now.

It was during one of the lockouts. Not sure if it was NBA or NHL lockout though
Yeah 2011 was an NBA lockout. However the season doesn't usually start until the end of October with preseason games in early October. So I'm not sure if the decision to broadcast TCT was related to the NBA situation (I know you didn't say that if was, but someone had said that earlier).

MSG has its own app too.

Whatever, I’m with @Amazing Kreiderman that 2019 is clearly different from any prior year in many aspects, especially 2011 if that’s what’s being used as the base line in their decision making.

My main point is that it doesn't make sense to me. MSG Networks' decision making doesn't align with the Rangers communication to their fan base
