Did anyone see corrente in the first game against Montreal? I didn't think he looked bad at all in that game. Seemed to be an adequate call up, though id agree he struggled in the second.

that's exactly it. him, Nash, Welsh, Sutter, Bowman,...... all adequate callups but needed now. I guess with Dwyer they can make up a passable 4th but they may sprinkle a couple of these guys throughout and go. one more established NHLer would have been nice.

Of course it depends on health, but a 4th line of Bowman, Nash, and Dwyer should be an adequate 4th line. The problem last season was that those 3 were essentially the 3rd line.

that's right that was a big problem and when you say it like that it makes me feel a little better. picking up Gerbe and Dvorak was huge. wonder why they haven't signed Dvorak yet. I bet they would prefer it if they didn't have to even at a million.

he is one of the few that don't just charge to the net and fire it at the goalie's pads. they need his play making skills.

I think he made under 700k last season.

I think 1m and he would be happy, and would be fair.

Kinda my point. We don't really need a guy who takes 3 stupid penalties every night.

Who says he will be there when all is said and done? He hasn't made the team yet and this was just the first round of waivers. The coaches (whether HF posters agree or not) must be seeing enough in him that they aren't going to make their decision solely based on 1 pre-season game.

Welsh and Dalpe have stunk it up for multiple pre-season games and they are still around.

Could just be a matter of not wanting an odd number of defensive pairings while Gleason is out. Either way, he's the 9th defenseman and maybe the 15th forward. He'll be gone in a week.

By all accounts Dalpe had a pretty good game his second game. He blocked shots, was credited with a hit or two, and shot the puck also (one was a particularly good chance IIRC). He was fast, and all over the ice in the 3rd period. Sure he didn't score but, he wasn't invisible like he was in the 1st game. I'm an admitted Dalpe fan, but was critical of him earlier in camp (he can't be invisible ever). Clearly the coaches saw something that they liked.

Welsh is another story; that's just a $1,000,000 salary that they are hoping can miraculously morph into an adequate 4th liner. I look for him in Charlotte by the weekend.

But that's my point. The poster was asking why Corrente was still here even though he took multiple penalties in a pre-season game. Obviously, the coaches saw something that had them keep him around.

Anyhow, he's a long shot no matter what and will likely be in the last set of cuts. Unless there are injuries, I think Dalpe also will (unless he plays lights out in the final two pre-season games or the Canes don't want to expose him to waivers). From everything I can tell, he's been outplayed by Gerbe, Terry and Bowman so far.

Wasn't it pretty much necessary to sign him in the first place though? He was highly regarded coming out of college and if he turned into a Matt Read type success story, it'd look great. Still a good risk, even if the contract isn't in hindsight.

Man, that contract looks bad right now.
It looked like a bad deal the moment it was signed, at least to astute observers such as myself

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showpost.php?p=54257265&postcount=18

And it probably would have been a good idea to buy him out. 333k over two years + the cost of an AHL replacement (probably 250k max on a two-way) or $1M? Then again JR said last year that he deserves to be on the team based on "size alone", so maybe he once again mistakenly thought Jeremy Welsh's height was going to turn him into an NHL-caliber player.

Small market teams can't afford to make these mistakes and JR made two of them with Peters/Welsh. Add in Westgarth and you are paying $2.25M for probably 40 combined games of AHL-level play.

But this was his second contract. The first was a two-way deal eaten up by playing that one NHL game at the end of the season. Then he was unsigned the next year until the eve of training camp when JR gave in and signed him to a contract with a one-way salary in the second year.

Yeah I know it was his second deal, but I was wondering if there was some sort of handshake agreement on terms. Probably not though, given he wasn't signed immediately. I forgot about that.

Interesting to note all these legit 4th line players being sent down to the AHL while we hold out hope for some of our own to turn into just that. A few interesting names across the wire every day.
