GDT: Training Camp discussion - Rifai and Murray on waivers -- Steeves clears

Haven't heard much about McMann this pre-season. Wonder why he's being picked on to play with the AHL'ers

He was projected to be a Berube sort of player

He hasn't really stood out in pre-season but he's been paired with a random assortments of top 9 players in pre-season.

He's had all kinds of chances to win a gig. He got the playoff start too and look awful, it's on him.
Do you decide if a player will be great off of 11 games?

How about when they rip is confidence away from him by showing him they don't trust him - do you think that helps him to play better?

Remeber he's like 23 years old - temper your expectations and remember how much of an idiot you were at 23 - I know I was a disaster at that age. - not trying to offend you.

We expect perfection from growing, developing players. It just doesn't happen every time like 34, 16 and 88 - There will be pain. We have 80+ million dollars to spend - a 3 million dollar player shouldn't be what makes or breaks us.

He's 25 first of all. Second, he looked better two years ago, I haven't seen any development in his game. He was terrifying this playoffs, the lack of composure with the puck was alarming. He's good depth, if he finds another level great, I don't see it.

And he wasn't 100% healthy, as per Keefe.
But he was still better than Brodie who received 2*3.75 from Chicago. I know it is Chicago, but they could have signed any other number of bottom defenders.

He's looked good in the games he's played.

I don't think there is a shot that he isn't on the opening night roster.

It’s funny that we are debating which teams in the Matthews era have been the best when by the results they have all been crap. First round losses abound. This fact is beyond debate…..it’s real. We can throw all the excuses we want but they have been playoff failures
That's not "crap". It's a disappointment, yes. It is under performing, yes. It's not crap. The Leafs have been one of the five or six best teams in the league the last several years and most of the the 25 or so behind us haven't won a cup either...so unless your definition of crap includes 25 teams then I think your choice of words is inaccurate.

Rielly Tanev
OEL McCabe
Benoit Hakanpää
Rifai Mattinen

Trade/Demote the rest (Timmins, Liljegren).

Zero growth or improvement in the last 8 years in the playoffs if not crap is certainly major failure.
For the supposed talent and all the resources this franchise has to offer it is absolutely shameful that this is the best they can do but if just making the playoffs is the benchmark then they have been good

Or they keep working to breakthrough in the toughest division in hockey.

In the past seven seasons the Atlantic Division has:

• Lifted three Stanley Cups (Florida ‘24, Tampa ‘21, Tampa ‘20)

• Represented the Eastern Conference in six out of seven Cup Finals, including each of the past six

• Accounted for four of the top 11 NHL teams in playoff games played.

Maybe they are growing and improving like a team does, it's just harder to have to play Tampa, Boston or Florida than the LA Kings.

The Florida Panthers went 25 years without winning a playoff series. They missed the playoffs a few years before winning a cup. They did change their GM and their coach. We did that too.

I have a feeling the Pacioretty-Kampf-Robertson line we saw today is our third line on opening night.

and the yearly "player X (marner/nylander) playing center/defence" one week distraction is over.
The bottom six is very suspect in that practice group. Dewar and Reaves on the third line? Really? I like them as people but they’re not 3rd line NHL players.

Kampf isn’t a third line C.

What are the chances Vancouver and Toronto meet in the finals?

I'm glad you are enjoying this success
I will start watching in round 2*

You realize it is a practice group and not the future lineup?

Cool. That statement doesn't totally reconcile with a person that is posting on a discussion board in pre-season.

I am going to imagine that those Panthers fans that believed and stuck with the team enjoyed the cup even more than those that jumped on late. We will welcome you on the bandwagon in Rd 2.

Dewar still still get a game in. Kampf looked competent last night and played his typical game (ignoring Cap implications). Jarnkrok looks like his typical self, shot a perfect crease front pass into the goalies glove.

Locks:
Matthews
Nylander
Marner
Tavares
Robertson
Lorentz
Holmberg

Should be lock's but not showing it:
Knies
McMann

Meh but will probably make the team:
Pacioretty
Kampf
Jarnkrok
Reeves

Odd man out: Dewar

Back to Junior: Cowan

They should probably waive Reeves to get the forwards down to 12 but trading Jarnkrok (or Kampf) works for me as well.

Rafai and Meyer had a very good game. First call ups if they pass waivers.

Liljegren looks unenthused, no urgency. Very disappointed. They will probably let him try to play his way to being better at his contract and cap hit.

Treliving has a few moves to make. Timmins should either make the team or get traded because he’ll be snapped up on waivers.

I think they are hiding Murray because another good game and he would be gone on waivers too. Probably will get claimed anyway.

We are going to lose one or two regular NhL players for nothing and people will moan. But Lorentz and Robertson have been excellent. They have to replace someone.

I have been saying for a while and I still don't even know if it is possible, but not signing Lorentz (or even Pacioretty) right away is a lever we have to manage the cap in the early season before injuries hit. I do wonder why neither PTO has signed yet.

I would also waive Reaves to gain cap and roster flexibility.
