We do know that the team is going above the player in this case. Even if you think Robertson is better, it's a marginal difference at present and the difference is not worth the cost of losing Malgin entirely, especially before we even see what he can do in actual games.We don't necessarily know if the team is going above the player in this case.
Also, when you're at that age, you're thinking of you. The difference between being in the AHL and the NHL is like 700k for him.
I disagree that everybody is only thinking of themselves at that age (that's a pretty pessimistic view), and while I'm sure he's disappointed, I'm sure he understands how the NHL works, that he's likely to still get the majority of the year in the NHL, and that getting caught up in minor salary discrepancies for a couple games isn't productive for a future multi-millionaire.
