If Tavares can't go on opening night the Leafs will have to play with 19 players (11 forwards) and then get an emergency recall for game 2 vs Washington. This is assuming Tavares isn't going on LTIR (doesn't seem like he will be out long enough).

Barring another injury or trade they will need to go 11 frwds in g1.

I presume ZAR will sign, Gaudette and Robertson sent down (no need to waive Malgin). Then for game 2 Robertson is emergency recalled back up.

Robertson has earned a spot....his waiver exemption though could be his undoing...because I don't know how you let Malgin hit the waiver wire... he'll be gone! Both deserve to be in the show....hard decisions coming certainly. With Tavares out I suppose both could stay...but that's a very temporary thing. Or a guy who I think fills a role/need on this team like ZAR, you simply don't sign. I don't know what's right here, don't envy the people in charge of making decisions on this lol

Yeah I think they'll give Malgin a run and that may mean Robertson on the Marlies when JT returns. I suspect Keefe will be pushing hard for ZAR.

Keefe is low key a hitZZ guy :sarcasm:.

ZAR is 100% making this roster. Quality truculence.

Robertson is in a flow state playing with the most confidence he's ever had while finally playing with fast and skilled passers. Sending him down at this moment in time would just get in the way of our highest ascending growth stock who's building momentum and confidence every game. Playing for the marlies won't benefit him. He needs to play. Getting him away from Tavares and the 4th line has really let him loose. Just leave it to Keefe though to send him down while he's ascending and then call him up in a week to play 4th line. Let him play!

Does the opening roster have to be submitted today or Monday?

He’s 20. A stint with the Marlins shouldn’t hurt him at all.

If it’s just a couple days then emergency call up I’m okay with it, if that’s the plan. If it’s just a straight send down to “ripen more”, it‘s a mistake.
If it's 1 game and he returns in a role where he can excel i'm fine with it. If this drags out and Robertson is down for a while then keeping Malgin over Robertson becomes not worth it imo.

He's 21 and age shouldn't matter. If you're ready you're ready.
Still, there in a numbers game and a stint in the minors shouldn’t hurt him.

If they feel he’s ready and 50 50 between him and Malgin, then I agree I’d take him over Malgin. Malgin will never have Robertson’s shot and goal scoring potential.

Malgin is 25. He has already proven in several stints in the NHL that he is nothing special. I think it would be a mistake to play him over Robertson who is already better than him.

It’s prolly worth mentioning at this point that Malgin played his off wing this camp, too.
If Willy transitions to the middle, it opens up so much.
And something still has to give between Kerfoot/Engvall/Holl you’d think.

At some point something definitely has to give there.
They can try a couple different things to kick the can down the road a bit but eventually someone has to go.

Here’s an idea… ship out Kerfoot. Replace him seamlessly with Jarnkrok and keep Robertson and Malgin. Generate cap space while icing the best team… I call that a win/win.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Jarnkrok-Malgin
ZAR-Kampf-Aube Kubel.

So I got to ask. How physical is our fourth line? Are we going to get brought to our feet like in game 1 of the playoffs or are these hits going to be handed out like soft Candy on Halloween?

I think Robertson beats out Malgin by a hair and it comes down to Kerfoot and Tavares' health vs Malgin. Obviously only considering Malgin over Kerfoot for cap compliant reasons.

1. With Kerfoot and Tavares healthy. = Malgin cut.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Kerfoot-Nylander
Engvall-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Aston-Reese-Kampf-Aube-Kubel

2. With Kerfoot and no Tavares. = Malgin gets another game, Robertson up in game 2 with emergency re-call. Malgin still probably cut when Tavares is back though but he still makes the team.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Kerfoot-Nylander
Engvall-Jarnkrok-Malgin
Aston-Reese-Kampf-Aube-Kubel

3. Without Kerfoot and Tavares healthy = Malgin makes the team.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Nylander-Malgin
Engvall-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Aston-Reese-Kampf-Aube-Kubel

4. Without Kerfoot and Tavares to start.

Robertson-Nylander-Malgin
Engvall-Holmberg-Jarnkrok
Aston-Reese-Kampf-Aube-Kubel

We have a pretty good idea that both Malgin and NickRob have chemistry with Willy, and some evidence that NickRob has chemistry with JT.
I’d be curious to see NickRob with Willy and JT with Malgin, so the top two offensive threats per line have complimentary handedness.
Having a 2a/2b lineup sounds pretty good to me, and you can always stack in a pinch.

I'm not really sold on Robertson working with JT and I didn't see evidence that JT and Robertson worked. Both J.T and Robertson are shooters. I think Robertson works best with fast skaters who can get him the puck.

I’m referring to last year’s advanced stats, which I barely understand but smart guys reported were encouraging for the combo.
Agreed that line looked good.
