How do they prove you've done it in the first place?

Say we give Tanev 4M × 7 years and they say they don't like it, so? We've had a 40 year old defenseman as recently as last season, Giordano

It's unprovable
They take it the same route they did with Kovalchuk. Reject the deal, penalize the team

Well, if Tanev only plays 2 or 3 years of a 6-year deal, it'll be kind of obvious.

Like the Tanev signing, but comes with a lot of risk

Domi signing is meh at best.

Mirtle says they’re pretty much only in on Zadorov when it comes to dmen, which is bad.

Hope we re-sign Bertuzzi. Something around 4.25mil per x 4 or 5 yrs.
Hope we can land Zadorov..unfortunately that likely costs 5mil x 5yrs to get done.
And obviously hope we can add Tanev at a reasonable price point.
I'd like Talbot as a hometown veteran back-up / 1B for Woll to lean on. Something like 1.75 mil per x 2 years.

Trade Kampf and is 2.4 mil to whoever wants him. Holmberg can fill that spot for cheaper and is ready to be an everyday NHLer.
Trade Jarnkrok and his 3 mil to whoever wants him.
And if an agreement can't be reached with Marner and he's going to ask for a comparable contract to Matthews again, trade him for picks and sign a guy like Jeff Skinner. Can't keep Marner as a rental, and I don't think Treliving is going to let Marner pull a Gaudreau on him.

It can work if Bertuzzi signs the same deal as Domi. assume zadarov at 5.5 and brossoit at 2.5, we have 1.5 to sign a 6th D (I'd suppose a PP specialist, maybe someone like justin shultz).

That's assuming 20 man roster only, but this has been how we operated in the past few years.

I'm not a fan at all of 20 player rosters. It's just not efficient and you get into so many issues with call-ups. Then you're playing the thin line of having to LTIR players or even ice depleted lineups.

They absolutely will be very close to the cap but there should be no reason not to create more room if they want to add some expensive players like Zadorov and Bertuzzi. And they still haven't added a quality RHD after Tanev in this.

Leafs could get creative by packaging Robertson, Jarnkrok, Kampf and/or Liljegren, etc, for pick(s) or maybe a player that fits a need and then signing Skinner to a cheap-ish 1 year deal to replace that lost forward depth.

But we've seen so many cap dumps and buyouts in the last couple weeks. It will be hard to find takers for our average players. They aren't cap anchors though so maybe there's a chance.

Yes, but the Leafs have their counter in that they can offer ridiculous lump-sum signing bonuses.

Which I also hate because it is designed to dodge tax, and I don't think societal rules should be bent for the sake of Hockey and 1%ters.

Then change the ******* law, that's a legislative problem not the problem of the people taking advantage of it

Why are we signing him, then?

Because he's still good I'd imagine

No, but they're likely going to let Manchester City get away with 115 charges against their rules.

so there's that...

But does the NBA do many favors for the Knicks? MLB almost doesn't count because there's no cap.
The NBA allows far more leeway to their large market teams than the NHL does, which is why their overall revenues have vastly outstripped the NHL's in the last 30 years. That's what happens when a commissioner can be held in place permanently by just 11 small market owners.

How do you change that in multiple states and provinces? it's impossible.

The league could establish a rule allowing teams outside the no-tax states to dip into a pool of money. That would work, but it hasn't happened.
