D-men take time to develop in genereal. Liljegren is about 190ish NHL games, Rielly didn't break out offensively until 300+ games. I think Lily will get better eventually. He just lacked confidence IMO; and that had more to do with the trash that Keefe was than the player himself IMO.

Personally I would keep Liljegren and given him another year or two; dump Timmins instead. I think under Berube Lily can improve quite a bit and he would be nearing 300ish NHL games and then if he is still not it we can trade him or just walk away.

At least if I was Treliving thats what I'd do. I wouldn't roll the dice on Liljegren just yet.... we need some young d-men as a fallback safety net plan; and if I had to choose I'd easily pick Liljegren to stick around. I think he has another gear.

The problem is Liljegren has arb rights and I don’t think you can risk him being awarded something absurd. Hopefully they qualify him and trade him.

I just don’t see it with Liljegren, I’m sorry.

If we sign Bertuzzi today - my spidey senses are tingling, because the math likely doesn’t work with signing 2 quality D men

F*ck it. I’m all in on Zadarov. He’s huge, and those guys take a lot longer to develop. I think he brings a lot of what we need. I wish he should the other way, but then he wouldn’t be available.

Add Boqist as well for cheap. Dump Kampf.

If Liljegren goes unqualified, Treliving should be fired. Garbage asset management.

We’ll probably see:

Rielly - Tanev
Zadorov - McCabe

It's ok when healthy but one injury to a fairly thin RHD depth and we're back into "Leafs need to trade for a rental RHD"

Really no excuse to not get more quality depth. I'm not the biggest Zadorov fan but I understand the appeal. So if they blow a good chunk of the cap on him, they better find some value to bolster the offensive ability of the back end further.

I agree. I wonder if they keep Liljegren on a 1 year deal or if they go out and sign one of Carrier or Walker and trade Liljegren…

I wonder if Bertuzzi is around the same ballpark? Locking them up under 8M would be pretty decent all things considered. It's not perfect and plenty of other work for Treliving to do but it's the minimum of being able to get back on track.

Leafs absolutely need to lock up Tanev and another quality RHD.
I think we need some space on LW with McMann, Knies and Robertson. Jarn can also spot in on LW, so can Domi. I assume Dewar is locked into 4 LW so it gets tight quick for Bert

It could go a lot of ways. I'd be trying to keep as much high end depth as I can upfront regardless. Maybe you can punt a Jarnkrok for whatever you can get but I'd even be weary of dumping Kampf. Depth is key.

Leafs and Treliving don't seem overly keen on making huge chances and getting creative, so I suspect it'll be pretty straight forward.

I’m sure they tried trading him, probably doesn’t really have much value as an RFA. I don’t think any teams are gonna risk going to arb with him. Probably more valuable as a UFA to most teams.

Add in Benoit on the 3rd pairing and you have a blueline that is going to make Woll's job a little easier.
Would need some more puck moving ability from that blueline but some solid options whether that’s keeping Liljegren or signing one of Carrier, Walker, or Boqvist who are right handed.

It can work if Bertuzzi signs the same deal as Domi. assume zadarov at 5.5 and brossoit at 2.5, we have 1.5 to sign a 6th D (I'd suppose a PP specialist, maybe someone like justin shultz).

That's assuming 20 man roster only, but this has been how we operated in the past few years.

The Naki
Well, would be penalized after the fact, I guess.

How do they prove you've done it in the first place?

Say we give Tanev 4M × 7 years and they say they don't like it, so? We've had a 40 year old defenseman as recently as last season, Giordano

It's unprovable
