Sergachev was part of their top core, I'm not sure trading him was the best idea.

Sergachev was part of their top core, I'm not sure trading him was the best idea.

Yeah but they needed to make changes to resign Hedman and maybe even Stamkos. Now they added a very good prospect, a solid defenseman signed cheaper and picks. Sergachev was not great for an 8M defenseman.

Also plenty of decent D available in free agency, and they may already have a guy lined up for like ~4-5M, instead of Sergachev's 8.5M.

no I get that but I just wish that the pick we got this year was a little better than a 7th.

Even if it was a 4th or 5th this year instead of a 7th it wouldn't be so bad.

Not a great trade in terms of value. Usually punting 1 year gets more than just a VERY late pick.
