Unfortunately, Willy doesn't have the defensive prowess to pull off playing center. Marner does and surely understands that centers will earn more.
Doesn't have or doesn't focus on?

Willy can play defence in his sleep. You can be sure that opposing players are most concerned about Matty or Willy closing in.

For all we know Willy has been deployed center everywhere but here because when he plays wing he cheats. Its definitely worth a shot, he's been a winger only because we acquired JT.

We don't know if Mitch will be here next year, potentially a huge whiff there. If the circumstances were swapped, I'd go Mitch.

In an effort to free up two players seeking relocation this summer, the staff at Maple Leafs Daily are reporting on a wild trade rumor that would see the Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Finnish sniper Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a package deal.

Of course, we know that Laine has requested a trade from CBJ GM Don Waddell, but as fate would have it Leafs forward Nick Robertson has also requested a trade out of Toronto. Mike Armenti of Maple Leafs Daily reports that a trade centered around Laine and Robertson could work out well for both sides. The Leafs, of course, though would need to sweeten the deal in order to land Laine, a former 2nd overall pick with superstar potential.

In the proposed deal the Leafs would send Robertson, Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf and their 2026 1st round pick in exchange for Laine and a 2026 2nd round pick. Armenti also reports that the Blue Jackets would have to retain $4.4 million (50%) of Laine's contract to make the deal happen.

Knies Matthews Domi
McMann Marner W.Nylander
Holmberg Tavares Jarnkrok
Dewar Kampf Reaves/A.Nylander

Move Marner to #2C.
I'd say Nylander to centre rather than Marner. He's played it more, more recently, and at a much higher level.

I'm willing to try either, especially over Tavares, but I think Willy's more likely to succeed there.

A team burdened with a couple of high priced ineffective forwards needs another?

Lets get PLD and PoolParty and we have the Top 4 picks in the AM draft.

What makes this a rumour? Sounds like a made up proposal you’d find here daily.

Move Marner to #2C.
Nylander to 2C and I agree with your lines as Nylander played C regularly on the marlies and prior to joining the organization on team Sweden. I'd actually bet Nylander is playing C during this upcoming 4 nation's tournament and it's a question that comes up for berube early days training camp.

We need a RH center and Nylander has the speed, strength, and vision to do it. Adding Marner (a godly defensive player apparently) to his wing gives them that balance of offense-defense.

ZERO chance I'd include a 1st in any deal for Laine, let alone a 1st and a 2nd in the same draft

They’ll get better offers elsewhere imo…….

Seeing a lot more of these not so cheap long term deals off of a small sample size

He’s a promising youngster but man that’s rich off of an 84 game sample size

Faber was teammates with Matthew Knies when they played for the University of Minnesota in the Big-10.

While both players were born in 2002, Knies was drafted one year later in 2021 due to missing out on the cut-off date for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by a month. Faber was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round in 2020 and Knies was selected by the Maple Leafs a year later also in the 2nd round.

Knies is now in the last year of his contract and could be re-signed by the Leafs and he also has 83 game sample size at the moment. Is this the kind of deal Leafs might be looking at ??

Knies is scheduled to play LW with Matthews this year and potentially Marner, so his stats are likely to jump significantly.

Would you give Knies an 8 x $6.5 AAV right now?

Leon is a money player that performs when it counts most in the playoffs,

Over the course of the last 3 years only McDavid has scored more points.

View attachment 897983

Nobody has scored more goals over that time.

So this is going to be a BIG contract. Teams pay up for playoff warriors.
He was a bargain at 8.5m on his last deal. He'd be one hell of a team player if he took less than Matty on an 8 year deal to play in Edmonton. Probably signals that McDavid also resigns with the Oilers.

Was just about to say that should most likely put to rest any hopes of McDavid coming home.

I'm all for Laine getting a redemption shot

But if you want to talk about trading away picks and not having selections within the Top XXX, this is exactly the trade you don't make

Short of him taking a pay cut, I don't have an interest in running this back again.

I think you let Matthews and 88 be your high priced guys and you figure out a different group to move forward with.

2 wingers at 11.5-12.5M isn't a recipe for success unless they're both Kucherov.

I'm still surprised Nylander got $11.5

I maintain part of it was backpay, but does that follow with lesser raise for marner?

Yeah not sure the thought process behind that. Unless they don't plan to keep Marner how can you not pay the better player more? Guessing he's around 12 unless he takes a discount.

I would only take a chance on Laine if he comes to our Leafs for cheap.

As a 2nd overall draft pick, he has already failed to stick in Winnipeg and Columbus. What makes anyone think he'd be anywhere close to productive as a Leaf? Unless you consider his participation in the NHL player assistance program as a positive, all he has done on the ice is less than positive at this point.

IMHO, you don't trade a 1st round pick for a reclamation project player. Although it sounds typical for our Leafs, trading a 1st round pick for a still unproven to be a consistent team player that is Laine, would be a HUGE mistake.

JMHO.
