Hyped, no.. Curious, yes.

No big, sexy splash from Toronto this summer (disappointing) -- But I am curious to see with a new coach and revamped d-core (its night and day better from last years game 1 roster), how Toronto looks throughout the season, if they are solid in there own end and can transition up the ice quickly and smoothly. If they can, it should improve the overall team game.
not for me. i feel like they punting this year until marner/jt off the books

Personally I think if there's interest from the marner camp in extending for 8 x 12.5ish it gets done. That contract will age pretty well I think. Getting JT's 11M of the books is key in fixing defense and goaltending.
Reduce JT's 11Mil down to $4-5 mil, and the difference goes to Marner, Knies and McCabe.... there really won't be extra money sitting around. If we walk from JT for some reason... you'll need a new 2C... which will be more than the $4-5 mil I suggested above.

We already need a 2C, JT is no longer a 2C

Tre fixed the D this month. Now we got holes on LW and we are thin at C but sure let's get Marner @ $12.5m done. He is going to shit the bed next April like he usually does. If Tre is not dumb enough to sign him before the playoffs, they should let him walk.

Sure thing... 40th in scoring for a C, while being top 10 in Faceoffs is a sure sign the guy is a 3rd line C.
So he is on the cusp of what you could call a 2nd line center based on those numbers. And really, if you actually watched him play, he can't skate worth a dam anymore, can barely protect the puck and struggled hard to play well in most games. He has been very disappointing for the last few seasons. His faceoffs are the only good thing about him now.

He's on the cusp of being a 1st line C based on those numbers. 32 1st line C's, means he's the 8th best second line C. His two year numbers place him solidly into the 1st line C production.

People are going nuts over Stamkos, a guy who is far worse than Tavares at everything except the PP. Tavares is still a C, and produces more at 5v5 than Stamkos... a guy Nashville saw fit to give a 4 years x $8 mil contract too.

No doubt, Tavares had a bad year by his standards, and maybe it's a decline in play... and mostly he's overpaid now... but he's still solidly a 2C, and one of the better ones. There is no statistical argument to prove otherwise, except I'm mad bro.

I expect he re-signs, and I've been saying Malkin type deal ...

Again, I suspect an experienced NHL coach is going to fix some of the things wrong with the execution.

Seems even Keefe admits (although he might not recognize it) that he was in over his head in Toronto.

why sign a 34 year old to a multi year deal if your throwing the first year? makes no sense. especially when most people in hear believe Tanev only has probably 2 more good years at best.
why not .. that's who Tre's been enamoured with, u either sign him or u dont. When I say punt, I mean the FO believes their hands are tied so they did what they could and will hope a coaching change improves the club. Oh nothing we can do, gotta wait till next year = loser mentality.

No ones mad...I've seen enough of him to believe he isn't a capable player any more. He was carried by his teammates. His value is in faceoffs now, that's it.

Same.

Which might be the smartest thing done in years.
I don't know if "punting" is the right term for this year. It is however not the year to be going "all-in". The difference? All-in would have been trading prospects for short term pieces I guess and we didn't do that at the TDL, the draft or the rest of the off-season (so far).

I think our goals for this year should be:
  • Playoff success and winning a Stanley Cup (these should always be the goal)
  • Figure out if our 2C is already on the roster (Nylander or Marner)
  • Figure out if Woll can be 1G (or Stolarz I guess)
  • Improve our defensive game with new coaches and personnel in place.
  • Integrate youth into the lineup. I would like to see at least 120 games (Combined) from Cowan, Minten, and Grebyonkin. I would love to see a handful from Niemela and maybe one or two from Hildeby.
  • Give our young NHLers a chance to take a step forward. This includes Knies, Robertson, McMann, Holmberg, Benoit, Liljegren, and Woll.
If we can finish the year knowing we have a 2C, 1G, can play better team defense, and know what youth we can pencil in for 2025 this would be a success. We will have $10M to $20M to spend and know where we need to spend it. What if 2025 looked like

Knies Matthews Marner
Cowan/Grebyonkin Nylander Domi
Robertson Tavares McMann
Holmberg Minten Dewar
Tverberg, Quillan, Hirvonen

Rielly Ekblad
OEL Liljegren
McCabe Tanev
Benoit Hakanpaa
Webber Niemela

Woll
Stolarz
Hildeby/Akhtyamov

+$5M to 10M to spend?

It's not punting, but it is not making short term moves that hamper us long term.

*NOTE. Tavares is back at 4 years x $3M and Marner is back for 8 years x $12M or less.

Pittsburgh has about 6M in cap space with a 20-man roster and are currently projected to miss the playoffs again. Their 3RW is either of Bemstrom or Puustinen and their 1LW is O’Connor. They could use both Jarnkrok and Robertson and the Leafs could use some draft capital.

If the Leafs could get 2 2nds or a 2nd and 3rd they could then turn around and flip that for a 3C.

Stamkos does a narrower job at a higher level, teams still have to gameplan around his shot on the PP. I don’t think teams really care about the threat Tavares presents overall. He’s more effective at ES sure but not enough that teams will pull some of their focus on our top line to make sure Tavares is contained. You can match up an average contender’s 2nd line against him in a series and be pretty confident you’ll at least break even unless Nylander/Marner is on a hot streak.

I don’t know that Stamkos is worth his contract but if you swapped him and Tavares we’d be more dangerous to deal with as a whole even if there’s a downgrade at ES. I don’t mind him I just don’t think a few points difference at ES at the cost of a very vanilla skillset matters. I’d probably prefer that he pull a Stamkos and become a specialist winger, maybe bulk up a bit and hyperfocus on becoming a pure netfront menace.
