Had 3 chances to close out Montréal series Gallagher 5 hole was a killer wont win any Cups with him as number WON

Played very well in the final 3 games, the 5 hole goal aside.

The 6th game in particular, I think they outchanced us like 18-1 high danger chances in the first 1-2 periods...we basically only put the foot to the gas pedal for the final 10 minutes in each game, just a very sad effort that a goalie can't do anything about.

They need to go goalie hunting, perhaps not the extent of trading for someone like Gibson who for sure becomes our starter, but they need a goalie that will be able to take over the net incase Campbell struggles. Having bad goaltending is one of the easiest way for the season to get derailed, we saw it with Enroth and Sparks where our backup goalie couldn't get a win and we were forced to play Andersen 65 games.

I agree though, goaltending and defense were not the reason why we lost to MTL. Although I am in favor of moving Holl or Dermott and plugging Lilly and Sandin into those open slots and signing a depth D. Leafs need to start inserting our top prospects into our lineup. The only way I am comfortable moving Holl is if Dermott can play in the top 4 with Muzzin and then running Sandin and Lilly as our 3rd pair.

Defense has not really been a problem, but Campbell was shaky for the last three games we lost. You can't have an .891 whenever the pressure gets ramped up.

Not that he was entirely useless or anything, but when Price is a brick wall, being mediocre at best is not going to cut it.

Across the last three games, the Leafs had 31 HD Chances vs. the Habs' 18 at ES. We had 2 HDGF, they had 4. They also scored 3 PP goals in the last two games despite not scoring a single one the first 5 games. We scored 3 PP goals in 15 opportunities in the first 5 games; none in the last 3 games in 7 opportunities.

We're the anti-clutch lol.

We should have been able to fluke into at least one win in the last 3 with the way we played... It was not our best hockey, but it was not like the Habs were really all that great themselves outside of Price.

Here is how that situation will look when Leafs return to the Atlantic Div against their competition netminding next season.

5 X Highest AAV goalies

1. Carey Price - Montreal
2. Sergei Bobrovsky - Florida
3. Andrei Vasilevskiy - Tampa Bay

4. Marc-André Fleury - Vegas
5. Tuuka Rask - Boston

4 of the teams the Leafs will competing for a playoff spot against including the 2 X SCF teams all have invested heavily in goaltending, and Leafs are going to attempt to match that with Jack Campbell and another goalie likely spending $4 mil combined.

Wow, how can the leafs keep up with Bobrovsky and regular season Carey Price?

Might be better to forfeit the season.

If Kerfoot (expansion/trade), Holl (expansion/trade) and Engvall (trade) were off the roster, the leafs could technically fit in the cap hit.

You essentially just sacrifice your ability to add a key forward up front, and need to rely on Galchenyuk coming back to play with Tavares and Nylander which looked good, as well as Foligno being willing to come back on the cheap to play with Matthews and Marner, which again, looked fine in the small sample we saw it before Foligno got hurt, and then placed with Tavares and Nylander.

You still have room to add a couple third liners to revamp the bottom 6, at 2-2.25M each. (Names are just placeholders).

Overall I do think it's highly unlikely. A roster could look something like this however;

This team has 4 reliable producers and nothing beyond that.

They will run into the same problem again next season.

I would move Foligno to the 3rd line. Trade Rielly and use his cap space + Haula cap space for a reliable LW finisher and a downgrade on LD (with Sandin competing for that spot as well).

Good first year in the AHL, I take it you know a bit more of this player than I do lol.

I think he's a long-term option to be an elite 3c.

Just like most Marner trades, the biggest benefit is what you can do with the cap space. Let's say it's Gibson and Comtois + coming back.... you could keep Kerfoot and also sign Brandon Saad, Blake Coleman, Erik Haula, and Sean Kuraly.

Comtois-Matthews-Nylander
Saad-Tavares-Coleman
Kerfoot-Haula-Mikheyev
Simmonds-Kuraly-Spezza

Looks too good to be true. Have you done the math?

Cap space which you allocate to 29-30 year old free agent 3rd liners.

Sounds like a fantastic plan.

Gave Saad 5, Comtois 4, Coleman 3.75, Haula, 2.25, and Kuraly 1.25, and that left a bit over 200,000 to shuttle spares up and down.

I think you're low on Saad and Coleman. I think Saad ends up back in Chicago for 5.5M ish, and Coleman in Dallas for 4.25-4.5Mish.

No need to trade for a goalie with some of these guys in free agency. Lots of names to like for potentially bargain prices
Since free agency sucks ass for goalies this year, either trade for one or if you don't want to do that, sign someone you think might be able to break through. At worst, you can go with a tandem and see if there's something better next year.
Worth signing Chara to pair with Liljegren on the bottom pair?
Ordinarily I would take Chara in a second, even at 40+, but what you have to worry about there is the combination of Chara basically having to use interference and hooking to get around anymore 'cause he's too slow combined with the NHL treating the Leafs like they're the Broad Street Builles no matter what their roster actually looks like...

In short, I think Chara in Toronto would be a penalty machine.
