Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

I heard Bennett lives in T.O in the off season. No brainer IMO if he's willing to come here for same money Tavares wants. This core is stale as it is.

The article also questions it because JT is not going anywhere else. They need to get the AAV down somehow so they can upgrade the bottom 6. Clearly being top heavy with these 5 does not work.
I don't see why you don't shoot for both. Give Tavares an extra year to bring the cap down into the $6.5 million range, extend Knies on a bridge deal, then sign Bennett as an FA and clean up your roster around the edges, featuring a couple extra ELCs.

According to TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs would only part with some of their top prospects such as Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten, and Ben Danford in "a supreme package trade".

Darren Dreger says in his opinion, the best affordable NHL centres right now that might be available in a trade are:

• Brayden Schenn

• Scott Laughton

Aaron Korolnek and Jamie McLennan are joined by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger to discuss why he has his eyes on the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Trade Deadline approaches and are there any assets GM Brad Treliving is not willing to deal to improve the team this season.

I don't see why Gourde wouldn't be available, he's a pending UFA even if he isn't going to be fit before the TDL

Maybe the injury thing brings the price down? I think he's the type of guy Tre and Berube would like

There's some risk but if we're not going to raid the farm in a big way it may be one of the better options

At the end of the day if they run the core back and lose early in the playoffs again, the serious fans don't need to take the team seriously anymore.
A lot of serious fans will continue to support the team regardless. Perhaps it is the less than serious fans who won't be taken as seriously.

He would only be someone that you want to LTIR until the playoffs for a very low price. Getting someone that won't help you until about a few weeks before the playoffs start is just not good. He doesn't know the team, he will be some form of rusty and will need to catch up. And there's no guarantee he'll be good. He could be good but the risk is not good.

Not sure if we have all the required assets to be able to acquire Cozens, Kunin and Korczak but our lines would be pretty deep.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McMann - Cozens - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Kunin
Pacioretty - Dewar - Lorentz

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Korczak
Ekman Larsson - Myers

Stolarz - Woll

What’s your alternative?
Don't re-sign Tavares until July 1st has passed and you take a shot at every good UFA available. Instead of rushing to lock him up, actually give yourself (the Leafs) a chance to sign a different player. Force him to make a decision between leaving Toronto and uprooting his family or taking a big discount - don't give him his location of choice and the money he wants.

Fans have no control over that.

Even better, don't sign him at all. Move on. Sometimes it's okay to move on.

If your stance is “I have no control therefore I have no opinion” then all the power to you.
You said people ‘blindly support’ and I asked what the alternative is? If you don’t have an answer that’s fine. If you feel your opinion makes a difference more power to you.

The alternative is go apply critical thinking skills to the decisions and discuss why the decisions being made by the team directly correlate to the lack of on-ice success. I completely understand your point and everyone is entitled to be a fan in their own way. To imply the side that chooses not to think is the serious side of the fan base is something I would disagree with. This board is a great place for both sides of the fan base to discuss!

Crosby would put this team on his back all the way to the finals.

2026 first
2027 first
Cowen
Minten
Hildeby
Domi (cap purpose)
Kampf (cap purpose)

Sid is still a force. The fact at his age he still makes most the rest of the team look like rookies is impressive

Marner for Sid (Agreed he gives us the next 2 years)

If Sid is moved I'd be very curious to see what the trade looks like. He has given Pittsburgh more than they could ever ask for and he chose to re-sign there last year. If he moved he isn't going to the highest bidder - he's going to the team he wants to go to. He probably choses that based on who he thinks can win. He probably doesn't want to weaken the roster of any team he goes to. If Sid goes to Dubas and says I want to play in Colorado (as an example) and I don't want any players to come off Colorado's roster in the trade - would Dubas not say "we will accommodate that"?

To take it a step further - if Crosby told Dubas to trade him to Colorado for future considerations, would Dubas say no?

Crosby could have gone to any team he wanted to this summer for no asset cost to that team but chose to re-sign in Pittsburgh at a perceived discount. Would Dubas turn around and deny him the right to go to any team he wants at no asset cost because he did a favor for the organization and re-signed before the season?

Dubas wants Marner. Will pay him.

Marner for Sid (2 years agreement)

Gives us three kicks at the can with a top player in the world.
