Unless Marner comes to you and offers a hometown discount you can't refuse, no one should be re-signed until after the playoffs.

Possibly not. That's not going to happen. They are about to sign JT for around 7m. If that's the case it's just going to be fanfare higher ticket costs and more merch. You know Marner is coming back.
I’m going to guess that Bennett isn’t his boy and he thinks he has no chance. Why else would he make this move?Possibly not.
It does strike me as odd that Treliving would spend that money before even having a crack at his boy Bennett, for example.
I heard Bennett lives in T.O in the off season. No brainer IMO if he's willing to come here for same money Tavares wants. This core is stale as it is.
The article also questions it because JT is not going anywhere else. They need to get the AAV down somehow so they can upgrade the bottom 6. Clearly being top heavy with these 5 does not work.
That's a lot of money for an old man. Should be in the 5 range after that overpay he came off of. It's only a 1 way street though. We overpay Willy because he was underpaid. We double up on overpaying JT because why? This teams weird
Bennett has a better point per game rate in the playoffs the last 2 seasons than Tavares does as a Leaf and he’s played more playoff games over that span. Why use career points per game in the playoffs when Tavares’ best playoff run was before he joined the Leafs?Let give 7M to a 50-55 pts player ( who's also producing at a 55 pts rate in carrer in playoff unstead of a pts/game player whos producing at a rate of 61 pts in playoff... and thinking that woukd change something
That 50-55 C has a SC, produces better in the playoffs and is not going to back down when he gets punched in the face. Tavares has not gotten past the 2nd round and will be 34 in September. Talk about running the same core back an 8th time and thinking it will work. They call that insanity.Let give 7M to a 50-55 pts player ( who's also producing at a 55 pts rate in carrer in playoff unstead of a pts/game player whos producing at a rate of 61 pts in playoff... and thinking that woukd change something
If leafs don't resign JT, with salary cap raising... he will have better offer than Stamkos last year. Add 7,5M to every NHL twam, that's make a lot of money to spend and bidding war in free agency.
If Tavares wants to sign somewhere else let him. Tampa isn’t missing Stamkos and I guarantee Nashville wouldn’t sign that contract today. If leafs don't resign JT, with salary cap raising... he will have better offer than Stamkos last year. Well, I heard someone, I believe it was Dreger earlier this season say that supposedly he still really likes him despite trading him to Florida, so...I’m going to guess that Bennett isn’t his boy and he thinks he has no chance. Why else would he make this move?
I'd want to see what he does in the playoffs before I make him any offer. Odds are he puts up less than .75 PPG and you can get him cheaper. If you give him $7m and he cannot fill the #2C spot, you will be f***ed IMO.If Tavares wants to sign somewhere else let him. Tampa isn’t missing Stamkos and I guarantee Nashville wouldn’t sign that contract today.
At the end of the day if they run the core back and lose early in the playoffs again, the serious fans don't need to take the team seriously anymore. If Tavares wants to sign somewhere else let him. Tampa isn’t missing Stamkos and I guarantee Nashville wouldn’t sign that contract today.
this - 100%At the end of the day if they run the core back and lose early in the playoffs again, the serious fans don't need to take the team seriously anymore.
The serious fans are already there. Some as early as Columbus. At the end of the day if they run the core back and lose early in the playoffs again, the serious fans don't need to take the team seriously anymore.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Toronto Maple Leafs and veteran forward John Tavares are close on a new extension, with some finer details all that needs to be done. He writes in a recent post, “There has been chatter of a three-year extension in place that requires some finetuning, but nobody will confirm. His AAV will drop, likely in the $7 million range.”
$7m might be fair but I'd rather do some shopping on July 1st to see if I can get a younger, speedier, better player for a bit more. Leafs might be concerned they lack C depth and may want to lock in JT sooner than later.
Doesn't that ignore the fact that Bennett was the 4th and 6th best scorer on his own team in those two strong years? Other players have done the heavy offensive lifting and there are no heavy lifters on the Leafs because they get their ticket punched early every year. I doubt their results are reversed if they were on the other team unless Bennett can also play goal. Not to say I want to run it back but Bennett in Toronto costs more than JT and there is for sure no guarantee he will be the player he was in Florida for the the playoffs the last couple of years. He is a 50pt center during the regular season and that might be who he really is.Bennett has a better point per game rate in the playoffs the last 2 seasons than Tavares does as a Leaf and he’s played more playoff games over that span. Coincidentally Tavares was 4th and 6th on the Leafs in playoff points the last 2 seasons. Only a Leafs fan would give this response.21 with how many concussions?
I think that would be a terrible trade for the Leafs. I wouldn't trade Knies for Dobson straight up.To Toronto: Noah Dobson
To Islanders: Matthew Knies + Conor Timmins + 2026 1st Rounder
I can see something like that if there were to be a done deal. But I highly doubt Dobson actually moves.
The bar is not high. We get zero production from bottom 6 and D.Coincidentally Tavares was 4th and 6th on the Leafs in playoff points the last 2 seasons. That should be the expectation on this team at 7M.

Nylander did not get you Dobson when tre was looking to trade 88. You are thinking with your heart. It is going to hurt if you want Dobson.Only a Leafs fan would give this response.

If Treliving was willing to trade Nylander for Dobson, we have bigger issues. I like Dobson's offensive ability, but he is a terrible defenseman when it comes to...defending. Anyone remember watching Jeff Norton play? That's what Dobson is. You don't trade Matt Knies for Jeff Norton. I expect that Dobson will end up being traded for a guy like Slavkofsky, because Lou has become a not so great GM.Nylander did not get you Dobson when tre was looking to trade 88. 30 year old on pace for 40 goals/82 points or 35 year old on pace for 26 goals/50 points. No brainer. If Tampa would resign Stamkos at 7M unstead of guentzel at 10M to 10,5M, with cap raising those contrat will also be higher and using the 3- 3,5M remaining to upgrade the team depht... Do that make you worst or better?
