That’s a tough argument. A top pair stud defenseman changes everything about your team.
We can all agree a Norris level defender should make a difference in the playoffs.
And since 1954, 15 Norris Winners also won the Cup.
However that number is skewed by 7 won prior to expansion.
Since expansion 8 Norris winners won Stanley the same year.

Again, talking about the Leafs, I don't think they've been 1 defender away from winning the Cup, unless that 1 defender is Erik Karlsson scoring 1.2 points per game, or at least scoring and being a plus player?

Honestly the Schenn buzz i don't understand it

6,5 M for a 33 yo 3 C with 3 years remaining at 6'5

Not sure its the smartest way to spend 6,5M

Is that just echo chamber talk here?

It has been talked about for a few days here and now

Where do these guys get these ideas? :sarcasm:

TSN: Darren Dreger reports “there's potential” for center Brayden Schenn to be traded by the St. Louis Blues. The 33-year-old Blues captain has a full no-trade clause this season. However, Dreger noted that Blues GM Doug Armstrong can be very aggressive in the trade market.2 hours ago

I'd be more inclined to move Danforth in any deals over the forward prospects. Toronto has a history of not being able to develop d-prospects.

Wonder if the goalie prospects would be an interest to some teams in a deal. Hildbeast / A.A both look to be promising,

I remember the Petro watch here in Toronto and doing all the mental math to see if we could fit him in and whatnot, reading the tea leaves on TSN with his appearances with Carlo, yucking it up. But also remember the possibility hit a chill with the realization he wasn’t really a homecoming GTA guy and had interest in Vegas. Don’t think it came down to being outbid as Petro wanted to do something that had nothing to do with being a Toronto guy coming home.

I think the time to get him was actually January 2019 when the Blues were in pure free fall before Berube took over. We ended up getting Muzzin from LA. But if St. Louis had stayed bad Petro would have been the guy to mortgage the farm on.
Imagine getting both Pietra and Muzzin that winter.

We get hosed in every single deal

Reports out there saying the Islanders are shopping Dobson, if that's the case, you trade whatever you need to in order to get him.

To Toronto-
Dobson

To Islanders-
Cowan
Niemela
Timmins
1st Round Pick

Then you trade,

To Toronto-
Brayden Schenn

To Blues-
Minten
 Kampf
Robertson
2nd Round Pick

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Mcmann-Tavares-Marner
Jarnkrok-Schenn-Nylander
Lorentz-Holmberg-Dewar

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Dobson
OEL-Myers

Read somewhere on Reddit that isles might be shopping dobson

We should trade w.e it takes to add Dobson.

We can then unload Rielly or keep him. W.e . But Dobson wiuld be insane

That is a tough ask, but Kampf going the other way has 3 years at 2.4.

Is Schenn 4.1 better?

Look at the signings Treliving made ... he doesn't seem concerned about agism and cap space.

People are mad of idea paying jt 7M but agree to pay Schenn 6,5M + his price look like pretty high. Make no sense at all

A Dobson would cost more than this to interest islander to move him. You can basically add Knies to your offer

A for the effort.

I'm unsure if I'd go for them, but some of the targets are interesting, namely Roy,

Minten, Danford and our goaltending depth should not be moved.

Cowen and our 1st 2026 should only be moved for a young center
Examples
Cozens, McLeod , Wright
I see it differently.

If you are bringing in a 2C or 3C that is young and had term, you move off of Minten, as he won’t be having a Centre spot, and 4C can be filled via UFA at a low cost.

You keep Cowan who represents our pipeline on the wing.

Why move our best prospect in wing when you bring in a centre, and keep a centre that has literally no spot in the lineup for the foreseeable future?

For this reason I haven’t been letting myself get attached to Minten. If we bring in a 2C or 3C, I think Minten is gone, which would be best for him as well.

Side note, no interest in any of the Schenn brothers.

Likes Luke when he came back but we need better, younger, and a longer term RHD solution. Not worth the cap and the trade pieces necessary.

Same for Brayden. Want someone who is younger and still has a development opportunity vs. an overpriced, hard mileage guy who will become a diminishing asset, when we already face a diminishing asset scenario at Centre with Tavares. At least Tavares stands to age better than Schenn.

We need a meaningful, long-term addition at centre and RHD. Giving up our slim pipeline of Minten (Centre) and Danford makes no sense to bring in old guys in band-aid roles.

Either get long term fixes or hang on to your assets.

Just thinking it through for a moment.

If we could get $1.5 million in salary retention from St. Louis as a frame of reference, and knock Schenn down to a cap hit of $5 million. And re-sign Tavares for up to but hopefully less than $6 million and basically turn the Tavares cap hit of $11 million into 2 centers, we would be in pretty good shape deepening the C slot.

Obviously we would need to get Knies re-signed $6 and probably bake in a $2.5 million raise for Marner the way things are going so that’ll eat up a lot of new cap right away. But we also have a lot of lower salaries guys who probably need to be cleaned up this year anyway.

I'm on the opposite spectrum, I think it's better to keep Minten the center, as it's a premier position, and trade Cowan as it's much easier to find top 6 winger via free agency & trade. Finding a younger player to be the second line center is a option, but there going to need a 3C in 2-3 years again with JT being older. I would be holding onto Minten as he can play 4C and then move his way up when Tavares is done.

I'm luke warm on B.Schenn, depends on the return. I'm worry of the age, running two 34 year olds as your 2C and 3C doesn't seem ideal. Also Cozens has two more years on his deal and is age 24, and 500k more cap hit, makes most sense to just pay the extra price and get him.
