Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

Would Robertson, Niemela and our 2nd be enough to start talks with LA about Clarke. Or are they not interested in moving him and just speculation because he was healthy scratched?
According to Dreger on TSN…

"[Doughty's] game came at the expense of young defenceman Brandt Clarke. Yeah, there was a little bit of undercurrent of speculation about if he could be in play," Dreger explained. "He’s not in play. He’s a young defenceman who just experienced how tough it is to stay in the NHL.”

"So, this is nothing but a recharge for Clarke."

Have zero interest in trading one of our top two prospects to try and buoy this choke-happy core. Would much prefer to trade lower draft capital for mid-lineup pieces and see how things go after that. Still need to decide if Mitch is worth keeping, and that hinges on the postseason. If we choose to walk away we’ll need Cowan and Minten to help fill the void.

Some big trades in 2025 already!

Not sure about the Philly thing but Frost would have been a nice gamble.

Vancouver did decent with Miller’s contract. Not to mention how they kinda f***ed around with him too.

If Toronto is putting Minten or Cowan on the table, the center coming back needs to have term on his contract.

I don't see anything that makes sense that'd require the Leafs to put either of them on the table unless there's a big curveball similar to the Rantanen trade. All the available players are rentals or lower end veterans.

I genuinely feel as though there is less than 1% this management group moves on from Minten. They absolutely rave about his intelligence and mentality in a way I havent seen as a leafs fan in..... a long time? Reminds me of what Colorado was saying about ROR after they drafted him (though he made the team out of his first camp and stuck!)

Makes sense. Seems like they've moved out or lost a lot of their depth at D over the years so probably want to keep the one that's their best offensively.
I would doubt it, unfortunately. They've really nerfed Niemela's value by not even using him in pre-season because of CB's height fetish.

They've also got a few guys who are basically Robertson as well: Turcotte, Fagemo, Thomas.

For Clarke, you are likely talking about Cowen, Minten, and next year's 1st being the stuff they'd be after.
Yeah true enough with the Robertson like players already. Just sucks that it seems like teams that have something we need make the worst trade partners for us because we don't have what they need.

I agree. I think the Leafs are more likely to trade Cowen than Minten.

That's what happens when you pay a few guys all the money. It leaves you with players you can't afford to trade or players that everyone already has.

What makes it even worse is when you spend draft picks like a drunken sailor. You're left with very few draft picks, very few prospects, and a haves and have nots lineup.

7 years of this takes its toll. When you spend tomorrow for today you don't have much left tomorrow.

Elias Pettersson* and Rangers 1st.
for
Morgan Rielly

Canucks throw in Blueger to help balance the Cap.

*The other Pettersson.
I’d be more than fine with something like that in the off-season and then we go and sign Chychrun in free agency.

With Van losing a top C, wonder if they'd have interest in Domi? Domi for Boeser as a base? Would need more cap going to Van (or elsewhere) to work, though..

I don't feel like trading away a number of years of Minten or/and Cowan for a potentially short misadventure with the 2024-25 Leafs is really worth it. This stretch of 6 losses in 9 really shows me I'm not enamored with the lead dogs on this team and I have zero confidence they have the character to grow into something more than they'v ebeen. The organization needs to get back onto a footing of medium term thinking and just have a pipeline into tomorrow and not keep over-investing on this iteration.
